What do you collect? Would you like a collection forum?

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Hi, I am just curious. I collect plants of course :) Daylilies/ Hosta but I also have other collections and love to share info about them. Mine is Fenton, Fireking, old watering cans, and depression glassware and cookbooks. My son collects Hot Wheels, my daughter collects post cards, ect.

Dave, if enough folks are interested could we have a new forum for Collectibles?
Thank you,
Teresa in KY

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

Where do I start? Let's see....

Rocks (or as some say "Gems and Minerals) and Fossils
Glass paperweights
Amy Lacombe Whisiclay Cats
Anything "cat" related
Key chains
Refrigerator magnets
Colored glass bottles (gonna make a bottle tree some day!)
Decorative items with sun faces on them
Cats!
Dust!

That's all my active collecting....in the past I've collected anything "cow"; campaign type buttons; lion figurines (I'm a Leo); buttons; tietacks; matchbooks........

Some people call it junk - I call it art.....you either are a collector or you're not.....guess I was born that way - come from "collector" stock!

I'd be interested in a Collectible forum......would be a great way to connect with others with similar tastes....

Flags.

Kylertown, PA(Zone 5b)

It seems to me that there was a forum like that here at one time, but I can't find it now. I remember posting in that forum that I collected Wade and the Red Rose tea figurines.

Maybe it didn't get alot of traffic and Dave deleted it or something?

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Dori,

I have a 12 year old that would love to have your beanies. :) She'd like to know if you're going to sell them anytime soon?

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

I have cups and saucers, cookbooks, christmas plates, lighthouses, pressed glass, porceline figurines and stuff like that! Just things I like to pull out and gloat over.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

I think I collect things that make me feel happy :)

Spokane Valley, WA(Zone 5b)

And that's as it should be, bluegrass! :)

I enjoy collecting coffee mugs from the various places I've visited. When space allows, I keep them all hung up on a rack near the kitchen. Then each morning, I decide what I feel like with today's coffee... a bighorn sheep from Glacier National Park? the Cayman Island turtle? an F-16 from Texas?!

Must've started with Oma's delicate teacup collection which I admired so much as a child. Mmm... happy memories!

Donna

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Oh boy! I have lots of collections, but a few right off the bat are.

Ceramic chickens, Happy Habit Nuns, old teacup/saucer sets, Dreamscicle angels, beading supplies, scrapbook supplies, books, movies...

I think my whole house and yard is a big giant collection. Not to mention the storage shed we rent that's packed full of all the stuff my Mom collected.

Hmmm... what don't we collect? I think we gravitate toward what tickles our fancies or what we find that we just like looking at that makes us feel as if we've personalized our space. Maps, Wildlife paintings, surveying instruments and other engineering collectibles, netsukes, oil and whale lamps, winter/summer flasks, cake stands, open wheel racers, windchimes, fractional currency, Rookwood, Arts & Crafts and Newcomb potteries, Galle, Daum Nancy, Phoenix/Consolidated, vintage trains and metal toys, stained glass, Mission & Prairie style anything, oh my gosh we have the collecting bug bad! We have a lot of indoor only cats but we don't collect them per se, we just sort of end up with them. Lemme see here, plants and more plants. Kids collect bones, rocks, hot wheels, feathers, snake skins, piggy banks, insects, leaves, and I am beginning to think they inherited our collecting bug! Looks as if we are one big obsessive compulsive collecting family. I'd be interested in a collections forum. I think I'd prefer to see one on moss and ferns first though as I can't say I'd do anything but lurk in a collections forum but I'd sure love lurking.

Spokane, WA

collecting things?

heh.... the concept is not, for me, what to collect...

but... WHERE DO I PUT IT ALL!!!! (i soooo want a bigger house... one the size of the empire state building might work... )

i have so many interests... i collect sportscards (over 100,000 and growing), just now getting into different glass/pottery, old books, magazines, toys, lighters, olympics, exposition trinkets (expo74 was here in spokane, so i see quite a bit of that at garage sales), old pocket am radios, banks, ....
i also collect alot of what others have commented on above... dust, wrapping paper from estate sales, boxes to take to estate sales but forget to, old puter parts that nobody will ever want, lol....

my lament is... so many trinkets, so little space....

;)

Coppell, TX(Zone 8a)

I collect vintage stuff! Ladies' frou frou, like hats, furs, beaded purses, beaded cardigans, lorgnettes (I put my own eyeglass prescription in and use them), high button shoes (unworn condition), loose powder compacts, baby stuff, wedding things, and my favorite, antique cabinet card photos!

I display the photos according to category, in french memo boards. I have Victorian babies in huge bonnets, beautiful ladies in hats, theatrical people in costumes, families, wedding photos, and my favorite, BAD HAIR! Some are nice, long hair, but most are terrible, which I have displayed near where I do my hair. This way, I can see people who are having worse hair days than I am ! LOL Must be from the very early days of permanent waves! Ungodly frizz!

My general rule of thumb in choosing photos (I'm very picky, don't want hundreds of things, just small special collections), is if the photo makes me laugh out loud, I buy it! I found one picture of an older woman, posed in a studio shot, with one hand by her mouth, with an expression that said "oh my God! I left the iron on!". I laughed when I saw that picture and I put her in a memo board with 16 babies...she's the grandma and so it looks like she's saying "Oh dear, how can I possibly look after all these children?" LOL

I love my collections. I actually wear and use my things. I get such a kick out of them.

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Joan, dear...you're not supposed to collect scrapbooking supplies. You're supposed to USE them. ha ha (although if you check my closet, you will find a LOT of scrapbooking supplies, too).

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

You know Carla, my niece told me the EXACT same thing the other day. So I spent the last three days sorting some pictures and grabbed a bunch of those scrapbook supplies and went to her house and we scrapped all day. It was great fun.

But you know, we just had to run down to the scrapbook store in the town where she lives and I bought more stuff that I don't need.

Then she had this great idea book, so I got online and ordered one from dMarie's. :)

The collection grows. Use a little, buy a lot!

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Joan, I went into a scrapbooking store here in OKC and the lady at the counter said, "Are you working on a particular project?" I said, "No, I just collect this stuff." Of course she understood completely. Fifty years from now, our children are going to be selling our excesses at yard sales.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Carla, the kids would make a small fortune selling all my scrapbook and craft supplies for little or nothing. If they wait 50 years, it will be vintage stuff, right? LOL. Collecting this stuff is almost an obsession with me.

I've told my kids that I have enough stuff to make books for the next 3 generations, so I expect them to make sure they get done :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Hmmmm, I collect Hall ball pitchers, Russian nesting dolls, hand blown perfume bottles, Antique toothpaste pots, framed antique toothpaste ads for the bathroom. Antique blue & white Staffordshire transferware dishes. Antique transferware children's tea set-dog & girl in red.
Photos of our ancestors in antique frames. For several years I worked on genealogy--haven't in a couple of months, but still--I guess that would make me a collector of our ancestor's names and dates. And last but not least, daylilies and other perennials. I think a collectors forum would be nice.

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

A collections forum would be fun... I collect old bits, anything to do with horses, postcards, and music boxes. And of course, plants! ;)

Gardena, CA

Am I the only coin collector ? Small change stuff. My garage is full of antique tools and any type of obsolete mechanical devices. Handcranked pea shuckers, cherry pitters, apple peelers and even a razor blade sharpener. Dietz lanterns, Coleman products and on and on and.........

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Hey, I just found a Deitz lantern at a yard sale on Friday for all of $2.00. It was a filthy mess until I cleaned it up. Now it's on my hearth. :)

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

Isn't it interesting that the rock collectors are both named Marcia? What's the odds of that?

Collected plates, but ran out of unique ways to display them, so stopped at two sets.

Collected matchbooks but stopped going to smoky bars ... (of course now they're smoke-free and don't have match books)

Collect anything "butterfly"

Houseplants are my most current and long-lasting passion, and DH lets me have a whole part of the garage for my "plant/planting supplies".

I think a collection forum would be wonderful; would give people ideas on where to go, how to amass and how to organize their collections.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

We could exchange websites and even set up trades if anyone wanted too.
I also collect hummingbird stuff, windchimes, old garden decor, ect.

YES!!!

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

I am collecting used stamps and beautiful flowering and foliage plants.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Great Question. I think a collection forum would be fun.
I collect boxes and chests. Wooden, ceramic, unique designs and some not so unique. I just love boxes. I put something in each one from a shiny rock to an unusual coin. Just something to see when you open it up. I think that came from my DH and my first Christmas. He gave me a big box that had several small boxes, each wraped inside. I kept thinking it was a ring. When I got to the last little box I was so excited I could hardly stand it. Much to my surprize it was empty. He said, nothing could match his love for me. Very sweet. Yea right. To this day I remind him to never never give me an empty box again. So far, he hasn't forgotten.
I have been collection Harmony Kingdom boxes for a while and never grow tired of them.
I also collect old bowls. Bauerand Yellow ware and a few others and I collect and create yard art.
Oh yea, I like to collect unique Christmas Ornaments too. I have several Christopher Radko ornaments. A little pricey but if you only buy one a year it's not too bad.

If you folks are like me you started a collection and may have added to it for years and then something new hits your fancy. What do you do with the old stuff? I could trade a lot of items! I have traded magazines/ gardeningbooks/plants/crafts by mail. Priority mail is great for even the breakable items.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Tombstonejan, I didn't think anyone but me collected boxes. I don't have many (all small), most are old cigar boxes, a microscope box and one lovely leather box, and a few others. I just love them!

I have my mother's teacup/saucer collection, which I will probably sell one set at a time sometime soon, after I move and unpack. There are 3-4 though that I want to keep, family pieces.

I think if I start another collection, it may be chopstick rests. They fascinate me, and I have a few, all newish not antique.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Hi, Darius
I was wondering what happen to you. Are you still coming to the KYRU?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Yes indeed! Had been without power for four days courtesy of Ivan, but safe and showered now, LOL.
