Redneck Gardening

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

Well----Redneck Gardening is basically " making due with what ya got" or " Southern Enginered" and making it work. Examples are-------planting tomatoes in tires, using flexible sewer field line pipe as a trellis, : ) I did that once to put my christmas lights over my gate. Worked great. Currently I use Carpet in my walkways between my flower beds cause I cant aford cement. My grandfather lives in a trailer 15 -18 feet from my House. Here is our carpet walk way between us.
What do you do?

Looks good to me! From a West Virginia hick's point of view. LOL

Hey, I like that. I bet it keeps the weeds down. I've heard of people using cardboard, which eventually breaks down and enriches the soil.

carpet does keep the weeds down-------and the shoes clean-------sometimes after it rains , your shoes may get alittle wet around the bottom edge but at least its not mud.

That's alright!!! I'm a Buckeye hillbilly (slightly displaced). We were raised to make -do and use what ya got! If it does the job, why not?

You know, your garden is bourgeoning with life. It has a sense of abundance in a nice jungley way.

As a 10 year old army brat, when we were stationed in Germany, Dad squeezed the whole family in a tiny Volkswagon and we did a 2 week of several European countries. Wonderful memories.

The thing is, Versailles, as designed by Le Notre for King Louis the somethingth, is held up by teachers of design as one of the most important gardens ever. It's got symmetry and main drags and statuary and so forth, and it is one of the deadest places I have ever visited. It's got nothing on your garden.

Aristocrats used to pay a hermit to hang out in their gardens. Lucky you, you've got your grandfather back there.

Well, thank you bluespiral.
That picture was taken a few months ago. Can you imagine how it looked a week ago before Ivan blew it to shreds.

That must have been so pretty before Ivan. It looks like you were growing some plants that need special attention in being carried over winter - all the more maddening. Time to plant winter pansies?

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

Nah-----I dont plant anything that needs to come in for the winter.
My Upright Elephant Ears do just fine in the ground. They even survive living in pots outdoors too. But we are in the process of making our front porch a sun/shade room so I can enjoy the potted elephant ears and cannas longer.
And , Nah----dont like the little pansies. I rather have mums.
I am still working on the front yard. It looks like [deleted]. The people who lived here long ago had sandy top soil brought in here but didnt add anything to retain moisture. Dries out in one day. So it is under contruction. It will soon be crouded with Hydrangeas and Hostas. Cannas, Elephant Ears, Touch me nots, Iris, Sedum, Perennial Begonias and Stella Day Lilies. And I havent decided what else to put under my huge oaks. I want my own Botanical Garden. I am 1/3 of the way there.

Hmmm - "front porch a sun/shade room" -- what would you think about taking perimeter down below frost line, paving only in middle? I don't know what woody shrubs and vines are considered exotic in your part of the world, but the idea of being surrounded with a tropical thicket blooming January to March has always been one of my fantasies. The tender woodies could be planted right in the ground. My fantasy sun porch would have glazed panels that could be unbolted and switched to screened panels for summer.

I'll bet my front yard has more fertilizer than yours.

My 'stone' landscaping is chunks of broken up concrete. After moss starts growing on them, you can't tell that they're not natural rock. I've also engineered a few things to serve as trellises, flower pots (I have two heavy 18-wheeler brake drums that are indestructible), and borders. I think Redneck gardening was probably the first recycling movement. ;-)

hey I used to have dozens of brake drum planters!!!
they also doubled in purpose of keeping people on the driveway
