garden huckleberries

Kearney, NE(Zone 5a)

A friend has planted huckleberries. Now what can she do with them? I tried one and it is nasty! Any ideas on when to pick them and how to prepare them? Thanks

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Garden Huckle berries have been pushed over the years as a substitute from making Huckleberry jam, pies etc. My mother used to grow them as a novelty but none of us would eat them. Actually a relative of the tomato and not close to a huckleberry at all.

I like the taste. I grew them from seed one time and they had nice, big berries. I find them growing beside the sidewalk in town and when the berries are ripe I pick and eat them. The other common name is Deadly Nightshade.

Be sure the fruit is ripe before ingesting: http://www.cniche.com/seed/hint27.htm

thanks for your help. I appreciate it. Jackie

I grew these some time back. Once was enough. They were beautiful and fully loaded but even the birds didn't seem to like the taste.
