Asp Fern has it's place for people who like it. Here at my new place, long ago someone planted some along the back fence and then just let it take over. The stems got really fat and the thorns got really deadly. They over took the entire chain link fence.
I don't want them here. This morning I went out and clipped the entire back fence clear, then clipped all the stems at ground level. Cleared all the debris into the yard waste bin. It was deadly, I have blood all over me from the thorn punctures.
I know they have many roots still lurking in the ground just waiting to jump up and grab me. I want to kill them all.
What is the best product to put on them to kill them in the ground, how long does it take, and when is it safe to plant new stuff in that area?

Killing Asparugus Fern
hi molly - we use roundup for tough plants. it's systemic and doesn't sterilize like dirt like some products do [triox]. you shouldn't have to wait too long to replant.
Thanks Toby, I'll be off to HD later to pick some up.

wow they can get that HUGE? wow take a pic plez i wanna see it!
Sure Dori,
I already cleared that back fence off yesterday morning, but I had taken some pictures a couple weeks ago. Here's one.....
Growing all over that back fence and up the tool shed into the overhang on the backside. You couldn't even walk between the tool shed and the fence it was so over grown.

wow that is crazy!!!! the thorns have to be HUGE~
Sounds like a plant that could become very invasive under some circumstances! I have never grown it myself but have seen it in many gardens in pots. Maybe this is why they didn't plant it in the ground!
Good luck getting rid of it. I would have used roundup on it but that needs to be put onto the foliage so having cut it back already it would not work.
Well Zaney, I didn't have the energy to yank these things up by the roots so I still have them there in the ground, staring at me and taunting me. I will get 'em!!!
