oooooooooooh Linda your garden must have smelled heavenly this year!! :D My mind has had brain freeze, yet again, what does CDW stand for?

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Echoes, that's an Iceland Poppy. They grow in the rockbed along with the saxifrag, so it's quite possible there is poppy seed mixed in. The Icelands are short-lived perennials here, so it should winter over for you, as well as self-seed. This looks like a white one. They also come in orange and yellow. They are quite robust in good soil, but will grow in gravel, as well.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Pam, the CDW stands for common double white. smells great, but the inner skirt often doesn't come down. I have really enjoyed the Charles Grimaldi, It looks and smells good. It's done well for 2 years now.

Echoes, here's a link to a thread I have on the tropicals forum about the hibiscus in the back ground. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/450573/ Hopefully it'll hyperlink OK.

The garden still smells good, especially in the evening.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

You have a camellia Linda??? Any pictures of it in bloom??? I want to live in your zone!!!!!!!!

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

LOL Lilypon, your excitement is contagious. Camellia's are almsot a dime a dozen out here. When are you going to pull up those crops and move west?! You should walk around here in the spring. You'll say doesn't everyone have a camellia?! They are all over. Personally, I think they are a messy plant. They flowers drop and rot in the yard, when some of the leaves drop, they don't compost. I don't think I have any of it in bloom, or of the neighbours that hangs over the fence...

On second thought, you better not come to visit. Not unless you have all your belongings packed and in the moving truck ready to follow you. Especially if you come in the spring. You won't be able to go back to -20 and snow after walking in shorts along the ocean shore and smelling all the trees, corcous's and daffs in bloom.

LOL, I live in BC (sung in a taunting tone) Ha Ha HA

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

OH, forgot these, my dad always does this to the quash, ans we still get a kick out of it. Any one else do it?

lolololol.....Linda you may regret your bragging ways. Earlier this year Carol posted her winter never got below zero, I in turn stuck out my tongue and threw a snowball her way (it was -52C here at the time) and I reminded her I could at least grow a mid-season tomato to ripeness. The man above heard our banter and this summer he gave to me an Alaskan summer and to Carol a prairie one (neither of us had the right plants for those growing conditions). You may be in for a strange year!! ;)

p.s. I don't dare play that game with you. With my luck we'd get your winter rain, which here would translate into snow.......I don't want to be shovelling 20 feet of it this winter!! nope nope nope!!!

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

No worries about that, the forcast is for a weak el nino, so WET and warm here. It's been a strange year already, for everyone. I'll be happy to not get any snow. Been there, done that, and fed up with it. Almost all Victorian's can't drive on anything other than either 'dry' or 'wet' roads. Throw in a bit of slickness, and I stay off the roads, to stay away from the other drivers who think they can drive.

North Saanich, Canada

Me too Linda!!! IF(and only IF) it snows, we dont' leave the yard. Too many crazy drivers out there. Us prairie people know how to drive in snow etc, but it's very scary out there with the other drivers who don't know how to drive in it!!!
We will hope we don't get the snow this year.
Was just at Costco, and got great deals on bags of crocus and hyacinth bulbs. There were lots of tulips too. that's where I got my giant fritillaria bulbs last year, and they did great.
But it too me 1 hour and 45 minutes to get from Sidney to Costco!!!!! Big traffic accident, so bumper to bumper for miles and miles and miles and miles..................................... SIGH!!!!
Your yard looks great Linda!!

Glenda

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Glenda, I saw the accident on the news, the malahat was closed too. I was going to send you the picture of the CDW, that's the cutting you have growing.. I'm going to have to go to the database to see what a Fritillaria is.

Hope to get together with you soon

funny, you should mention COSCO!!!!!!!! I came out after shopping and someone had let their buggy ram into my front bumper..darn it.........scratches all across the front...........!@#$%^&* E.

North Saanich, Canada

Funny things happen at Costco, don't they???? I stopped for a drink before I did my shopping(thirsty after being in that traffic jam for so long), and got to visit with a little old lady who just wanted to talk. So I gabbed away for a bit with her. Why not?? I had already spent a long time by myself in the car, so it was nice to visit with her.
How bad is your car scratched Elaine??? Hope it's not too bad. People should really be more careful. And also when they open their doors and smack into the next vehicle. I notice there is a bit of a mark on one of my doors that wasn't there before. I like my husband's idea of driving around in a big tank and just driving over anyone who ticks you off!!!! LOL!

Glenda

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Liz, thank you for the other, probably more correct name. It's really putting on a good show now, with some of the second skirts even dropping! Nice to see you here Liz, the plants you sent me are all doing well. 2 have bloomed, 3 more have buds, and when I get photos, I'll get you to ID them for sure for me.

I'll be at Costco later next week, their pharmacy has the cheapest prices in town, even for name brand stuff. Even with the good prices, my pharmacy bill is >$900/month, thank god for a good health care plan! Hopefully they will have some bulbs left over to check out. And, I think I'll park up hill at the far end of the lot, just to be safe.

Roselaine, you started this thread.... where's your garden photo's???

Hi Guys,
Can I ask for seeds on here or not?

Strawberry Candy DTF. Gone onto my must buy list. Is it a tiny bloom or huge? I've never been wild about daylilies before but made a little bed this year - about 18 orphans and one named from We're in the Hayfields Now.

Lilypons - will that rudbeckia have time to set seed ? I've never seen that one before. I have lots of rust/brown/multi coloured ones. I'll take a picture tomorrow. Don't know their name though. (Can feel Echoes wanting to pounce here). Honestly, how can anyone remember all the names of all the things in their garden.

To get to the thread.
I have aforementioned Rudbeckia,
a few lilium, brilliant blue ? from Echoes, lambs ears, one strange 2 inch high iris -- and weeds. And today a bright yellow sundrop - mississorensis - or something like.

Inanda - waiting for the pounce for sure now.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I don't know inanda but if it does I will ........ it certainly is a winner, the first flower has been open for well over a week and still looks like brand new.

I'm pretty sure we can ask for seeds here.....tho' we don't treat it as such it is the Canadian Trading Forum. ;)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I just purchased Hemerocallis *You Angel You* anybody out there growing it??? Love the end of year sales.......I hope it looks like the picture on the tag! See echoes you are getting me looking at perennials again.......not good!! ;)

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Inanda..which one of Henry Lorrain's daylillies do you have?
I have four from Hayfield now..Mais Oui,(didn't bloom this year)
Souvenir of Love and C'est la Vie ( just bought them..no blooms..will have to wait till next year...and also I have an Alice Louise..that is just a pretty one..not really a blow your mind kind.....

My Strawbery Candy is new this year..blooms are not huge though..about 4" max.

This is Alice Louise.

Thumbnail by Starzz

Ginny, you don't have to buy Strawberry Candy. I have enough to split with you. Rudbeckia is one I don't know all the names for as I have never had a keen interest in them. I did see one in Morden that I want to get next year, though. The petals point way down, it's tall and a nice clean yellow, not gold.

As for addictions, I'm skipping right past the hostas, I'm almost cured with the lilies and moving right along on the irises, but watch out hems cause here I come.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

I'm on it, Glenda!.....wait a minute! Elaine

WOW :D I think I'll use your picture to shame my plants into growing next year. My perennials did fine but my annuals/tomatoes ;) tended to just sit and sulk.

BTW welcome to the Canadian forum Ernie! :)

Ernie, good to see you sharing your pics with all of us Canadians. Since you are so close in distance I guess we could call you a "kissing cousin". Don't post here but lurk everyday, your gardens are all wonderful and I have learned alot by 'listebing to you'.
I too am ecouraging my tomatoes to ripen - those that actualy managed to survive - don't think they understand cheering though. All of my DayLilies except for the MiniPearl are done, still have some roses, hollyhocks and Delphiniums with new blooms.Almost all of the rest of the garden is a sight for sore eyes. I am embarrassed to say it is mine. Darn weather!!
More pictures please!!

Is Buffalo a heirloom Ernie? What are it's days to maturity?

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Buffalo is a commercial Green House type that gets with the program. best grown with two or three leaders reguardless of what the experts say at least in the pnw and my sandy loam soil. I grow it under a hoop house and don't know how well it will perform outside but given the heat lots of folks have I think ok because I never covered mine untill three weeks ago and they were well set by then. But we had 60 days of sun many days of 80 or better temp and no rain. I see Buffalo seed in very few seed catalogs because they are about .20 each which is expensive next to 30 seeds for $2.00 Buffalo ripens at 70 days after transplanting. I have been growing this for five years and it is the mainstay for the 15 20 other types I grow.

Some say to help ripen at this stage of the season grab the plant close to the ground pull up untill tight and rotate a quarter of a turn to break some roots causing the plant to think it is dying throwing it into high to ripen it's fruit. My dad used a big knife to cut the roots I tried it once and to tell the truth noticed no difference.

Dianne my friend which toms will you grow in the hoop next year I probably have seed for you if you want especially if you aren't hung up on heirlooms oh I have some of those to but if you want instant sucess you just need to let me send you some seed. Ernie

Buffalo is certainly not one for growing outside on the dry prairies.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Lilypon and when you grew it on the dry prairie how did you mulch and water it what were the day time highs is it to hot there. If heat and blazing sun is the problem there is a woman growing huge wonderful tomatoes in the desert conditions of Las Vegas she has a web site I think it might be wwwhot tomatoes. com but I am unsure of the web addy because I saw it a year ago. She is DG member though so you should be able to find her there. Ernie

I'll have to check that website out....thank you Ernie! :)

Cochrane, ON(Zone 2b)

Just love to see what others are growing in their gardens. There are some great pix here.

Seeing as we are three weeks behind last year, this is what is growing in my neck of the woods right now. Actually I don't think some of my stuff is going to get to bloom before frost. Predicting 2ºC for Wed night.

Cochrane, ON(Zone 2b)

I never should have put manure in this bed this year as the nasturtium leaves hide the blooms. The seeds were an afterthought as things were so slow.
