Is anyone familiar with this Dwarf version of the Dahlia. I purchases a half dozen of these tiny plants in a mid-summer sale for next to nothing. They looked a little rough, but I needed some fillers, so I gambled. Turned out they were vivacious growers, spreading (so far) to 3 times original size. Lovely little red and pink blooms apprear healthy and robust. When I visited a nursery lately, I asked about this species, as I was very unfamiliar, as to whether it was an annual or perennial. They were unsure. I read on a thread here in the plant database that it was a periennial. On another message, they were unsure as well. Does anyone know for sure and/or have any experience with this little gem?
Thanks,
Donna
Dahlietta?
I know that Dahlias in my area must be dug up before the ground freezes - preferably right after the first hard/killing frost. I believe that they are only hardy to zone 7 or 8 and that information varies from source to source. I don't know about Dahliettas as I haven't grown them, but I wouldn't think they'd be much different.
Thanks smilin32,
We grown Dahlias in Zone 5 as well. I have a lovely Powder Puff Blue Bayou that does extremely well each year, but of course, I do lift the tubers and store over the winter. But these little guys are a fraction of the size a normal Dahlia gets. Since postingin another forum, I got a response from a gardener in Seattle and she assures me that the are just like a normal Dahlia so that when I dig them up, I'll find little tubers under there. I am happy to here as they are real sweethearts and they'll have a place in my garden next year. :)
