Purple Bean plant?

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

My neighbor brought seeds home (pacific northwest)from Calif. this spring. It is a most wonderful beautiful "bean" that is purple and purple flowers and climbs her trellis. She gave me a few starts hoping I can get it going and get some more seeds for next year. Do you guys know the name of this plant?

Do you know if it is annual or perennial? Usually when I hear purple bean, the first thing that comes to mind is Lablab purpurea (Dolchios lablab). It has big heart shaped leaves and is also called hyacinth beans. The seeds remind me of little oreo cookies.

it's an annual and the bean is bean shaped or more like pea-pod shaped. the flowers are on a long stem and the whole vine/plant is loose and floppy and needs a trellis. there is even some purple in the leaves.

That sounds like Lablab purpureus (formerly Dolichos lablab): http://davesgarden.com/pdb/go/890/index.html
