Ugly mite-thingy on tapeworm plant

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

This tapeworm plant started turning brown overnight seemingly, and when I investigated, I found it was covered in this rusty-colored mite-type stuff, and I mean covered! Yuck!! Anyone have any knowledge about this weird plant? The whole thing has turned brown and I'm just going to cut it down to the stalk and start over, but what is this mess?

It looks like scale to me. If you do a search in this forum for scale, you'll find lots of discussion - many of us have been struggling with this ugly pest recently!

Good luck, it can be a booger to get rid of.

Can't say for sure without a clear close up shot but I would agree with scale insects.
