Mountain Fleece

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

I have posted this question in the perennial forum, but no one seems to know this flower. It has white spiked flowers simular to Astilbe. I would like to know its proper name. Also I am wondering if it is in the same family as the 'Chocolate' plant? I should have taken a picture when it was in full bloom but neglected to do this.

Could it be this one http://davesgarden.com/pdb/go/821/index.html, only a white form?

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

No, it is entirely different, Flowers are very fluffy just , as I said it almost looks like Astilbe but it is huge by comparism, it is at least 4' tall.

I have just interupted myself to look up Google and I found it, Sharvis, If you want to see the plant go to Google, ask for Great Plant Pick then on the left side pick 'perennials and bulbs, scroll down till you see PERSICARIA
POLYMORPHA, GIANT FLEECEFLOWER,WHITE DRAGON .
It describes the plant and shows a picture on the end.

Let me know if you found it! I am surprised no one could answer since I first asked about this plant.

Yep, I found it. Interestingly, I just bought one this year, but it's just a tiny little thing and still hasn't bloomed so I'm happy to see what it will finally look like. I may have to move it...gulp. BTW, I think it is sometimes called White Flowered Buckwheat (or at least mine is). I've also heard that it is often grown for the beautiful architectural contribution it gives to the garden. Glad you found it.

I planted it a year ago, it was in a 6" pot, you should have seen it this year, absolutely huge and so very beautiful with its bridal look It needs a lot of space as I have discovered and may have to move it also or other things near by.
There are so many different common names for the same plant that's why it is good to know the professional one.

aria, if you can get some pictures of it, we have a mighty lonely entry here: http://davesgarden.com/pdb/go/2203/index.html

It's been sitting empty for a loooong time, just waiting for some comments and images ;o)

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

I am very cross with myself, Terry, that I did not take a picture of it while in bloom. I always do of my flowers for my garden album . Guess we just have to wait till next year.
I find it very interesting that I had such a hard time getting a response from some members whom I thought would surely have it in their garden.

Maria, it all depends on the ebb and flow of members on the website. With the changes Dave has made, I suspect a lot of people have been spending their DG time figuring out the new features and navigating around. And plant ID questions are most likely to receive attention in this forum ;o)

BTW, images of the plant's leaves, seed head and overall form are still helpful for the PDB, even if you don't catch it in full bloom ;o)

Terry,
One of the reason I asked about this plant is I lost the tag when I bought it.last fall. A while ago I decided to look for it again and I found it! It tells me it is excellent combined with ornamental grasses that is exactly where I planted it but to my amazement it grew huge now the grasses are covering some of it. I will try to take a picture later but it won't compare to what it did look in full bloom.

I have no problem with the new Features, I might add the new style of printing is great, I am blind in one eye and the other is ready to join the same fate but it will be a while, thank goodness.

My gosh, aria, who cuts all that grass in the background? Looks very wekk manicured!

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

The foliage directly in front of the first picture, Terry, is joe-pye weed, I planted a month ago, just so you know it is not that of the mountain fleece.

Darius,
We have about 250 by 360 feet of lawn that includes a small house and my garden among 20 acres of land, three years ago we had 100 acres but had to sell.
A young man, not so young anymore, cuts our lawn he has been cutting it for at least 30 years since he was in high school. I do everything else as far as gardening goes but he also helps with the edging.
Thank you for noticing, I just wish I had taken a picture of this flower before it dropped its blossoms . it is very beautiful

Maria, I love what I have seen of your gardens... and I love that you love opera.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

I forget things very fast, Darius, I am contributing it to my old age, So now I wonder how to you know I love opera? I must have mentioned it somewhere but I am glad you noticed. I am also very happy that you respond to things I have to say in DG as I am always disappointed when someone does not. I know I am not a whiz at anything, I was so pleased when Terry asked me to show a picture of my Mountain fleece and terribly upset I did not have one when in full bloom.
Tomorrow I am getting a new digital camera. I worry I won't be able to understand how it works but my DD's husband will help me a lot.. We have such wonderful wild life here, especially birds of all kinds. One early morning a fox crossed my path, he looked at me as if to say, what are you doing here? And I looked at him and said, yes I know, you guys have been here a long. long time before us and now we are taking away your precious habitat. You must think I am little bit out it, LOL, and that this is not suitable for 'Garden Talk'

aria, I don't know where I read that you loved opera, just remembered it. Cannot be too many of us here who do, although my interest is no doubt not nearly as strong as yours. I just like it. Drama Queens, LOL. Plus, I just like the music.

Frankly, I think ALL of your above post is suitable for 'Garden Talk', and No, I do not think you are out of it a bit!

Wish you had a photo of the fox, though. I never seem to have my camera handy when I see something I should photograph.

Tip: Put more pagargaphs in your posts. Easier on old eyes like mine.

Hugs!

I will do that, Darius, making more paragraphs, I mean, Can't see well myself anyway.

I have macular degeneration in both eyes, see only out of one now, sort of.
You see that huge rock in the back yard? We call it pudding stone it consists of many little stones clued together forever,

That's typical of New England where we live. Trying to find good soil for planting is near impossible unless one is lucky enough to live in an old farm house where a farmer worked the earth a hundred years ago.

Half around that rock I have a garden. My DH's grandmother roses are there after many transplatings. I'll post you a picture of them from last year, right now they are getting ready for a second patch..

While I was taking pictures of the mountain fleece which is directly under the humming bird feeder, she came for her nectar, boy, was she upset I was there, she nearly landed on my head.

Feisty little birds, aren't they? I wonder if this is the same with all living creatures that are less than more?

Tell me about your garden!
