List Tradelist, TradeTracker or Journal bugs & ideas here!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I've let this thread drop in favor of some other pet projects, but it is probably time to at least start pulling these ideas together. In fact, since I pulled it out of the dusty recesses of my mind, I thought of a few more "nice-to-have's" for the tradelist:

What if we could have a textbox to explain our own rules/protocol (who/where we will trade with, whether we require IRC vs. SASE, etc.)?

OR the option of checking/unchecking certain trade limitations checkboxes such as:

1) will trade only within [home country listed in our profile]
2) will trade only with subscribed members of Dave's Garden
3) will trade only with registered members (subscribers and non-subscribers) of DG
4) require IRCs for international trades

Not checking any boxes would mean you would be willing to trade anywhere in the world with anyone. Checking one or more boxes would limit your trades to certain groups and/or geographical boundaries.

Checkboxes would be nice if they could be used to limit someone's search for people with whom they are compatible ;o) but even if that isn't feasible, having the limitations at the top of the tradelist would be nice to see before someone dives right in.

And since I'm dreaming up pie-in-the-sky stuff, it'd be nice if the system also included a link to our trader feedback AND a date stamp "tradelist last modified on October 21, 2003" (or whatever.)

If the names in our tradelist were simply highlighted like everywhere else, it would be a simple matter of going to that person's homepage to either email them or give them feedback.

I like all of your other suggestions too. :-)

I think the options boxes sound like a great idea.

Okay, what if Dave sent out a system reminder to everyone with a tradelist to update their lists?

Especially now that we can create a new tradelist by going through the PDB and checking off the items we have, will have or want to have ;o)

I know the tradelists are a vastly underused resource here, and I'd definitely like to see more people take an interest in setting up their items to trade with the cool tools Dave has developed.

So, one other "please, Dave" item is a separate text box for us to add someone's DG username to the tradetracker. That has forever been a source of chronic (if low level) pain. Granted, not all trades are through DG, but it would be sooo helpful to be able to add it when they are ;o) I'm not talking anything fancy (hyperlinks to their homepage or anything.) Just a place to type their DG name, just like we type their real name, email addy and physical address.

I love your idea of the system reminder.

One thing that does bother me is that people who are no longer subscribers are still in the system and you can't tell if they are still members or not. I'm not sure if this carries over into the tradelists or not, but if it does, a lot of invalid tradelists need to be culled somehow. I know that would be a lot of work, but I would be willing to help out.

As for the DG name problem, I simply type in their user name in front of their real name, that way I can keep them straight. It would be nice if we had a block for that though. Also, I personally think we no longer need the email address place, but that's only MHO.

Dave, IT would be Nice to have ... TRADE or IRC . beside the seeds ,straight up,, IRC instead of SASE ,For us over seas ,as some people don't realise where we live, it would be better if they realise what a IRD is before we started.

I'm glad you bumped this thread Terry. I hadn't see it before. I've still not use the trade tracker or trade list so I can only speak to the journal. And I've spoken to it many times and you don't even wanna know what I have said to it LOL. Seriously though, the journal feature for me is just about the top feature. I struggled with it a lot at first and started over 3 times. I still forget how to do things some times because it just doesn't seem very intuitive to me. Because I'm a stubborn old coot, I didn't give up on it, but I do wonder if others have because it is somewhat difficult to navigate and organize initially.

Maybe it is just me, but I find the use of terminology rather arbitrary and have a hard time remembering what you can do and can't do with categories vs. items vs. entries.

Although I have found a work around, the ability to jump in at any category or subcategory level and view and print everthing from that level down would be a big plus. There are things I like to print out to have as a reference when I am away from my computer but I don't want to have to open and view or print each entry within an item separately or each item within a subcategory separately. That just takes too much time and space and kills too many trees.

But even as it is now, I would like to encourage other newbies like myself to hang in there with the journal. Yep it can be very frustrating to get the hang of how to manipulate it, but it has pretty much replaced my WAY archaic system of hand written forms, spread sheets, data bases, etc etc etc ( none of which interface with any of the others) that use to clutter up my computer and my 3 ring binder. I am far from being an expert but I would be happy to try to help any newbies that are struggling to set up a journal rather than have you just throw up your hands and give up on it. Email me if you like and I will try to help out if I can.

Oh, and another thing....I need a post spell checker LOL.
