Master Gardeners

East Barre, VT(Zone 4a)

Any DGers out there ever take the Master Gardener's Basic Course and complete the volunteer work? Is the course worth it? I am contemplating a career change from a banker to a gardener, and thought this might be a good way to see how well suited I am for this drastic change in lifestyle. All thoughts and comments are welcome.

Thanks!

leisurlee- In case none of the MG's see this question, there is a Master Gardeners forum on DG- click on the forums link at the right hand side in the menu.

I want to do it too and ours in Los Angeles County specializes in teaching people to grow self sustaining crops in limited spaces. Just my bag! ; )

Daiseyavenue - first of all, I love your screen name! The real incentive behind my interest is to become as self sufficient as possible so I can afford to quit a job I hate, spend time in my gardens and teach others what I most love. It's very appealing. I'll go check out that forum right now. Thanks for the heads up.

Oh, garsh, thanks! I wish that I could claim originality but it is the name of the street where I live! But it is pretty appropriate for me.

Go for it! Sounds much more pleasant than a real job. LOL

Hi, notmartha! You are right! It is a choice thingy! I think that leisurlee and I both have common goals in learning, not just horticulture, but also the avenues of educating about gardening.

I am self taught too and learning all of the time but it would be nice to meet folks outside of DG, if you get my drift! LOL

Who new we had that forum on DG? Yes, I'm a Master Gardener by title alone. I took this class about 10 years ago right when I started to garden. I new nothing. It was a great course but I was hardly a master when I completed it. I think the name should be changed. I did get a lot of great information out of the class but learned everything about gardening from hands on and reading books. It was enjoyable and worth doing if you have some free time. When I took the class it was free. I hear there is a charge now? I bet it would be a great time to meet up with other gardening folks.
