candy cane curcuma

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

He has them on his website now. I went ahead and ordered mine since he has a limited quantity of them. Last year he was the only only carrying this one. This year I have seen a couple others carry it, but at double and triple his price. G rab it while you can.

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi George,

They leave Thailand this Friday, and will arrive to me a week from today. I'll begin shipping on the 17th, so it's safe to order at any time. I have plenty of the Candy Cane this year, but the Candy Cane hybrids are very limited. I could only get 100 of each of them for 2005, so they'll go quickly.

Thanks Chris. I made the order along with a couple of other plants you had that I could not resist (darn addiction when is someone going to start gardeners anonymous?).
This is my first try at Curcuma's but I just couldn't resist.
George in San Antonio.

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi George,

It came through fine, other than the software glitch. They're working on it now, and it should be fixed today. I'm holding off on sending the mass email to everyone until I know it's running smoothly.

Curcumas will do wonderfully in San Antonio. The biggest thing to keep in mind is soil temp. Until it's above 80, nothing is going to happen. Once foliage emerges, start the regular watering. Late spring and throughout the summer, they'll most likely need daily watering.

If any questions come up along the way, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks for you order.

We're going to Fla (staying around the lakeland area but travelling around) from 3/13/-3/20. Maybe you could let me know where some of these nice nurseries are, so I could do a little shopping while I'm down there. I have a greenhouse in PA, so I can grow most anything. Thanks.

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

That must have been your email that I just responded to.

from Lakeland, there are a couple of places you can check out. though they won't be in full glory. Exotic Plumeria in Seffner is a must, if you're a Plumeria fan. They're about 30 mins from Lakeland. I'll post links for these at the bottom. For strictly viewing purposes, Leu Gardens in Orlando, and Bok Tower in Lake Wales are good bets. Also, I don't know if they've kept the garden aspect alive, but prior to the re-vamp, Cypress Gardens had quite a display.

Unfortunately many of the small retail places have gone by the wayside in FL as the big box stores moved in. There are tons of nurseries, but the majority are wholesale only. If I think of others, I'll send them on.

Thank you so much. I do plan to attend the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens rare plant sale on 3/20/05. (We usually plan to be in Fla during that event) but we're open to suggestions. Do all those links above sell plants?

Mifflin, PA

This is the first I seen this type of plant, but it has a beautiful flower.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

If you would please can you tell me how fast they spread? I saw the pic in DG where they are planted in a mass bedding and it looks so beautiful.

Can they be planted at anytiem in zone think I am 8a or B on the border of the two. And when will they flower for my zone?

I didn't see Candy Stripe on the site unless it is not listed yet.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I dont know how fast they spread since this is only my second year growing it. I would say not very fast. That is my picture and I am in North Florida, just below you.
I just checked his website and it is on page 7 top row. It is called Candy Cane.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Rylaff..... Is your out in full sun? Can they take the hot afternoon full sun all day long? Did yours bloom the first year you got it and do you happen to remember the month it bloomed for you?

I got a bed to do and looking at that pic and how pretty the flower is made me think it might for a very intersting bed in a mass planting. But I am wondering what other flowers I can plant with it for companion plants that would look good.

The Candy Stripe as pretty as it may not go to gether with alot of other flower colors, but that white, pink, and purple sure do look pretty.

I have never grown one before and would hate to get 30 or 40 of em and have em croak on me. So, I would appreciate any info you or anybody else has.

Have a good Friday All!

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Mine bloomed in July first year. I have mine in afternoon shade. Not sure how it would do in full sun. Check with Chris at buried treasure, he will know. I ordered some more from him and I think I will plant them with some palm grass, that would look cool.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

The bulbs arrived today. As usual, Chris at Buried Treasures did a great job. I ordered more candy cane and a few others. He also has Mickey Mouse Taro bulbs. Had to have that. For that price too. Wow, very cheap. Also, one I had never heard of or seen before. Cant wait to grow that taro. I also ordered a few curcuma hybrids that should be interesting. Nobody else has them.

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Congratulations, rylaff!!!! Seems you will be very busy in your garden.

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Starlight,

I'm going to be back in town on Sunday night, and wil giveyou al te info you need. I'm on a hotel room web TV conection, and this keyboard istoo cumbersome to g into details, bt 'l getit to you.

Chris

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Ok thankyou very much Chris!!!!!! :)

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi Starlight,

I drove straight through, so now tat I'm hoppedup on caffeine from a long car ride, I can answer these. I might get to sleepby Sunday night.

These are cold hardy to zone 8, and I believe that's your zone, but please double check. The other hardiness factor to consider, is how wet your winters are. If they're overly wet, rot can become a problem. They need dry conditions during their winter dormancy. The Candy Cane and alismatifolia varieties are particularly prone to this, while the C. cordatas seem to take wet winters a bit better.

As far as sun goes, they can handle it fine, but may need daily watering, which is what we do down here.

Because you're right on the edge of zones, andI don't know your water habits during the winter, I'd hate to see you make a test run on 30-40. (though it does make a spectacular display). I'd recommend trying 6 (3 in the ground, and 3 in a pot or just 3 in the ground) If the ground ones come back, you should be safe to try a bed of them, making sure they're mulched particularly heavy during colder than normal winters.

Additionally, these should alll bloom the first year. The biggest key is soil temp, which is why I reommend trying ground and pot. The post you can move to an area that gets some warmth (85+), and you'll see those take off much faster.

If there's anything I missed, please ask again, and I'll cover it for you.

Chris

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

I don't think watering is gonna be a problem, you tell me, They will be going in to a mix of sandy loan with a pH of around 6.1 to 6.3 There is good drainage and the only watering will be what MOther Nature provides and me, but I not an over waterer if it doesn't require it. I usally go by the growers recommendation.

My temps get to be about the high 80's and high 90's during the summer. We do have those days where it hits the 100 mark but not oo often. I have a couple of places that get full sun and a couple of places that get semi shad because of a big oak tree in the center of a 3ft high raised cement bed around it.

Do the leaves get scorced during the summer or do they stay green. And can they be planted now? Genrally our temps at night range from 40 to 28 or 29 F and 45 to 60's during the day.

Course we are freezing right now from that Canadaian blast and it 8 degrees with the wind chill and temps last night was 20. I forgot to drip pipes last night and now mine are froze and here me with no water for coffee Agggggggggggggg! And so cold van wont start to go get some. : (

Can they be planted now, or when you plant them outside? I spent all day working in the bed yesterday and surprisingly the ground was fairly warm and pretty much on the dry side, just had normal moisture.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I bought some last year and started them as soon as I got them. However, I put them all in pots until I knew winter was over. Then I moved them outside and they did fine. The candy cane was so spectacular and unusual that I had to order more for this year.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

I forgot to ask how tall do these guys get. It kinda hard to tell in the pic. They look to be about as high as tulips or am I wrong?

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

That sounds about right. Not as tall as c. cordata. About the same height as the siam tulips.

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

The foliage can scorch if they're not provided enough water during the hot days. Those are the days they'd need a daily watering, and it sounds like the soil and wetness will be fine.

Their height will be about 18"

I wouldn't put them outside yet, but they can be started inside in pots. They love hot and humid, so if you have a spot next to a heater vent, or grow lights, you can get a jump start on them. They need to have the soil consistantly above 85 to get going, so if you can provide that somehow indoors, you ca get a jump start on the season. If not, I'd plant them after the last frost date for your area.

Janet and I can both vouch that Chris is as cute as a button but does appear to be a bit driving challenged, lol...

Driving challenged and can't count either. It's a wonder how I manage to stay in business. :-)

And no, Pam, your roads would provide no challenge, as I wouldn't be caught dead out side accept for those 3 days of the year when you don't have snow.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are SO bad, Jen!!!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

And how did the branch break???

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Car's not getting any worse, and that's a good thing.

It was apparently cursed in the Mobile, AL parking garage, Pam. Keep in mind I've had this car for a whole month now.

Friday morning I woke up to a $25.00 ticket for parking in a "Reserved Space". It was marked, but the sign was about 8" long in an unlit garage.

Saturday, I move the car up to the level the catwalk is on, so it will make load out easier. I think Janet is kidding when she asked how long ago my car got keyed. After looking at it, it was easy to tell her "within the last few hours". Nice job on the passenger door and hood.

JEN suggests I move closer to the cat walk. I agree, and then back into a cement pole after I'm all loaded and on my way out. Didn't even get out to look at that point, because I could care less.

Meet Jen and Janet for the final plant swap, and as I'm leaving there was apparently a bus behind me that took that tree out. If it were in front of me, that would have landed on the car and completed the tri-fecta of automobile carnage.

As nice as it was to meet them, I feel Janet and Jen are not healthy for my car, and others that meet to swap plants should take out additional insurance, and reuce their deductibles.

This PSA brought to you by Keyum, Keyum, and Crash.

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Hey, I think we just got a bad review Jen!!!!!!!

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

I personally give you both 5 out of 5 stars.

My car chimed in with a 1.5 cumulative score.

Don't hate the driver. Hate the car. I do.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

LOL.... Sorry for laughing Chris, but it is nice to know I am not the only one that has those kind of days. Poor Chris.. it sounds like you have a rough way to go. : )

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Now Chris, I am appaled that you would even suggest that Janet and I are unhealthy for your car, although we still feel that you should supply the repair to Bill Moore & Co and file it under workmans comp.
Hey Janet, are you Keyum or Crash?

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Still waiting for that paycheck!!!!!!!
