You guys still singing that song? in your heads eh?
Hopefully will be able to find a home for new stray soon... not to worry, we won't just abandon her.
Thanks, those signs are interesting to know. Never heard of them before. Maybe it's not a Canadian thing. Or maybe I should take a closer look at the gate posts.
How can people be so hearltless, how can people be so...
So glad to hear Pudge is doing better. I bet she had an obstruction and you're darn lucky that it came out on it's own! She'll probably start thriving now! She is a cutie and bless you for looking after her and all the others!
Well Byebye-PoorBaby-Pudge cost me 90.00 in vet bills today. Dewormed and antibiotics for ears, although he's not sure what's wrong. Not wonder people dump sick pets off in the country. Wish they'd dump them at the vet's house. grumble grumble
Oh-oh! :-|
Echoes....let me tell you about vet bills - I spent $254 yesterday for just a recheck on my oldest ailing cat. I have four of them and our vet bills run us about $3000 a year - not counting if we have a major illness. Found out that my Tooie has small cell lymphoma and we really can't do anything about it - because his kidneys couldn't take it. He's not in pain yet - so we're still heaping the lovin' on him. I WISH I could get out of the vets office for less than $100 a visit - I'd be dancin'!.....
I feel your pain. I just hate that it has to cost so much to look after a pet. Makes it so some people just don't have them or have them and don't look after them. I know vets have to make a living too, and God bless them. When we need one, we're sure glad they are there. Sorry your Tooie is sick.
Thanks for the kind words. I too wish vets didn't cost so much. I think sometimes they take advantage of the fact that you love your animal and want to do the very best you can. I recently got a new vet (my old one retired) and just a couple of months ago they went up on all their prices - doubled them. I spoke with her and told her I didn't appreciate that since I'd been a client for 12+ years and have 4 cats. She now charges me the original price for exams and I get a 10% discount - which has helped tremendously. So it pays to complain.
Tooie is anemic too we found out after his CBC came back. So he's on kitty Geritol! He likes it in food too - so that's one less struggle to get something down him. Although, I must be the luckiest person in the world. All of my cats are easy to pill - they just lay there and let me open their mouths and shoot it in! In fact, Tooie nows the routine so well now that at night all I have to do is tell him to get up on the couch and he's ready to go. Course, they all get lots of praise and lovin' after - so that probably helps.
Anyway - hope Pudge is doing better today. Keep us posted.
Healthcare for people and animals is a big issue with me. I think good health is a right not a "priviledge" for all of us! But, I have no idea what the solution is. We just can't afford good preventive healthcare for our critters and end up responding to emergencies.
Licorice? Makes sense to me. :-)
As you can see, stray #1 has grown a little. She's still a little stuffy nosed, and on antibiotics for her ears, but is now on the loose. She is already used to having the run of the house. Stray #2 is settling in to her new home. The last day she was here was traumatic for her. The barn cat next door chased her up a tree and after I threw a shoe at it, still came back to attack her at the back door. I'm glad she's gone before we got any more attached. She's with a family where I'll still see her. And I guess that's the end of this saga. Thanks for all your interest and supportive comments.
Until next time,
echoes
I work nights and don't come home until 4 am. When coming home about 2 years ago (driving on the freeway at 60mph plus) a truck flew by my and someone through a cat out toward my car. I tried to keep up and get their license number but they were driving at 100 mph plus. Be thankful all they did was abandon the poor thing. Some people out there are even more cruel and vicious. George aka Jester
Those are the ones that really anger me!!! The others are just plain stupid.
The lady that lived across the street moved to MS and took all of her dogs. She used to breed austrailian shepards and has a kennel there. She abandoned all the cats, three that I know of so far, they now live in my back yard.. now, I buy another 50 lbs of cat food plust 100 lbs of dog food every two weeks. Another neighbor down the street was walking with his wife a couple of nights ago and said there are more cats at that house. I guess they will eventually cross the street and come on over.
I don't know how these people can do that. They drop off kittens around here too. My neighbor is raising one that was a baby (she named it Paco, then took it to the vet to him fixed, and they announced that it was not a Paco, but a Pacita. The three cats we got are full grown. One of them sleeps in the garage at night, and sometimes I hear the doggie doors going, but all my dogs are asleep. At first I did not know what it was making that noise. But finally I spotted one cat, then two, then three..... I can't bring them into the house as they are afraid of our three dogs, and as soon as the dogs see them, well, the chasing starts. And on top of that I haven't been able to get close enough to touch them. They will wait around outside the gates till 10 pm, then I put out the food, so that the dogs won't chase them, I keep them inside the house. WHAT TO do?
Gourd, what do you want to do and, more importantly, what are you able to do?
Well, I know that I can keep feeding them, but that does not solve the problem, they need attention too. If I call the pound, they will come and get them, but then things will go down hill for the cats because they are older. I don't know how long we can keep on feeding them either. Cats were not in my future, especially three at once.
I saw one catch a mouse too. He is all black with green eyes (this one is the youngest), short hair. One is Black and has one white paw, long hair and fluffy, the other is yellowish. The yellowish one is very skinny, this woman left a couple of months ago and some of the cats are probably afraid to cross the road, the speed limit here is 40mp, but they drive 50 and above. I know that some of her cats have been run over by cars.
I sure wish that I had gotten her fowarding address, also the post office may have a forwarding address for her.. she should not have done that. On top of all of that, the dog pound was always at her house citing her for something or other.. maybe they could do something. I really just don't know what to do with them.. and I saw this post, and here I am. There must be something they can do about this neglect and abuse/abandonment..
You should consider reporting them to Animal Control. I would, just for the principle. They can get the forwarding address, if there is one. That doesnt help the critters still there. Are you near a no-kill shelter? If you are I would consider that but first take a lot of pictures of the animals to show Animal Control. The courts seem to like pictures, too. There is something "they" CAN do if the authorities are willing to pursue it! You and your neighbors ought to make sure they know ya'll are absolutely OUTRAGED! :-) Go for it!!
Just realised it's a month since we took in little Rascal. It seems she is older than we thought, so I think darius was right. She just got her adult fangs. My first clue to real trouble should have been when the vet wasn't sure what was wrong with her ears. No ear mites, and not just virus, maybe. After the first round of antibiotics they seemed to get better, then in a few days back to fluid in them. Vet phoned on Saturday to check on her. hmm. So she's back on the medication and supposed to go back for another look. He thinks she has nasal polyps. If they can be removed through her mouth, its about a 200.00 operation. If they have to get to the middle ear its a 400.00 operation. It's not going to be just pooor baaaby anymore it's going to be poooor echoes. Maybe that's why she was dumped. Anybody know anything about nasal polyps in cats?... Guess I should ask this in the pet forum. What to do. what to do. Gourd you have my sympathies. No matter what you do it's not a good situation
By the by, she is chasing the big girls around the house and using their litter box.
Don't know about pets but I had them. It wasn't pretty but after surgery I went from pretty much constant colds to one a year.
Hi echoes,
I just read this whole thread - she's a beeaoootiful kitty and I'm so happy she found you! Those vet bills can be a real bear though, eh? I've often wondered about pet insurance, as we have three kitties and one of them had heart trouble last year - needed X-rays, EKG, etc. Not sure if the premiums are worth it though...jury's still out. We don't mind getting the necessary care, to a point, as we have the means (for now at least) and they are like our surrogate kids.
Maybe this thread should be moved to the Pet forum - ? Not sure how that's done. BTW, nice slippers in those earlier posts! :-)
I agree spklatt. I think Dave has to to that.
Dave can move it if he wants, I don't mind. Think it's just about finished anyway. As for pet insurance, the time to get it is before your cat gets sick.
Rascal actually spit out another nasal polyp on her own last Thursday. This sounds so gross. So I guess the first thing she coughed out shortly after she came was a polyp also. She was much smaller and it was twice the size. Hoping and praying that's the last of them.
Just a few words... I am a breeder of English Bulldogs. All "puppy money" is use to take in rescues as well as stray dogs, cats and occasionally a human.
The woman who raises Austrailian Shepards and has moved to MS should be reported to the SPCA and all agencies who register puppies - AKC, CKC and NKC. If she abandoned cats in CA there is a very good possibility that she runs a "puppy mill" in MS. If the situation was described to them, I do believe at least SPCA & AKC would investigate her "kennel". (The AKC inspector is an upstanding person.) You can send AKC an email at www.akc.org. As long as she is able to get away with it, she will continue this type of behavior. - Judy
Judy, I hope your link is used!
Sorry, didn't mean to sound so gruff ... pepple abandoning animals is a "hot button" of mine - Judy

Me too Judy, me too! You didn't sound "gruff" at all. :-)
That's what started this thread. It really is a good thing I don't know who abondoned these two last cats, I probably would get myself in trouble for the things I might say or do. I think these people must be deficient in the heart strings department, and maybe in the head function department too.
Edited to add......Rascal aka Poor Baby died on October 22, my heart broke.

Its been a great thread echoes. Given me and others a chance to blow off some steam.
Yeah, just a follow-up note on pet insurance, the time to get it may not be at all. There's some controversy out there as to whether it's worth it, financially. I guess each pet owner would have to assess that for themselves. I'd definitely advise reading the fine print, as there are a lot of loopholes by which coverage can be denied in any particular case.
