Japanese beetles

Lansing, MI

My neighbor has some lovely scented roses, and I was going to plant some . . . then the Japanese beetles hit. I am still in the planning process. Is there a list of flowers that Japanese beetles like/do not like so that I can plant appropriately?

Hi, In answer to your question about Japanese beetles.
They will eat almost anything. But their preference is
roses.Everymorning early when the beetles are rather sluggish,
Prepare a large jar add water about 1/2 full and then add
liquid soap detergent. Go out in the yard and start your hunt. You can usually just hold the jar to the side and shake the beetles inside. They will drown and the oils in the
detergent will smother them.
Those nasty critters stick to my sheets when I hang them out
side on the line. I just pick them off and squash them with
my fingers.
Funny Story: One night my husband said something is tryng
to bite me, under the sheets, We turn the sheets back and
there was a Japanese Beetle. We laughed and he said I
need to do more Tiddlewinks to the beetles. If you remember
the old game, you just use your second finger and flip them
into the jar. If some fly away. They will always be back
tomorrow and you can catch them.
We do not like to use diazanon on our lawn because we have
a dog and cat. They get the chemicals in their paws, lick
their paws and it can make them very sick. Sometimes fatal.
By the way If you have any information on a list of plants
that deer do not like I would appreciate some help.
Hope I have helped you a little bit.

Japanese beetles are eating all my basil. I am afraid to spray, but don't want to lose the plants completely! What can I do???

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've been known to put a few into an indoor container until the main attack is past...

Sometimes, it works to pick their "favorite" basil plant and use it as a trap crop -- spray it with something nasty, like Sevin, and then don't eat from that plant later.

I've also resorted to spray, then pinched them back hard after the beetles were gone and simply harvested the new, spray-free growth.

Hey Debbie! Well in my yard they like...

Cherry trees
Ornamental Pears (the burgandy kind)
Roses
grape vines
wild morning glories (they can have those!)
New Guinea Impatiens
Hollyhocks
Coneflower
Shamrocks
Asparagus fruit/seeds/flowers or whatever they are!
Elephant ears

They don't like
Tomatoes
Grasses-Miscanthus, etc.
Begonias
Coleus
Hostas
Bananas
Succulents
Salvia
Rosemary
Bradford Pears
weeds-ha!
Eggplants
Peppers
Squash,etc
Black eyed susans
Bee Balm
Lemon Grass
Japanese Maples (go figure!)
Corkscrew willows

I am SURE that even though they don't eat those things in my yard, they probably eat them in other peoples though! They seem to eat anything!
