I took a picture of this plaque in a garden in Eureka Springs and was wondering if you thought like they did?
Do you agree with this or not?
I agree whole heartedly--gardens are dreamed and imagined, slaved over, babied, neglected during Little League season, despaired of, celebrated and enjoyed--not bought.
We just did the pond and garden tour here. Several of the ponds were professionally installed by landscape companies and while lovely, they were not nearly so interesting as the not so perfect, now-we-know-how-to-do-it, owner built with love ponds.
My friend has started a gardening business where she puts in gardens and ponds for other folks. It pays pretty good, and it is work she loves, but we can never get over the idea that other people don't care exactly where the daisy and black-eyed Susan combination goes, or that they don't have a start of something from Grandma or a plant that they have moved from three houses and are anxious about or--the list is endless.
I am headed out to work in my back yard now, to make notes of what does and what doesn't work together--the perennial border is an unending mystery--and just a BIT of aggravation--to me. I don't think any paid person would care or lose sleep over why I cannot seem to get bloom sequences, and heights and colors and forms right. I do care and do lose sleep, some of the best ideas come in the middle of the night.
Sorry to be so long winded.
I totally agreewith JJBS. Gardens require a lot of personal input and attention.
Love it........I'm gonna borrow that one!!
"eyes"
Absolutely! Even like the bug eaten leaves.
I am in total agreement.... I am borrowing that also.
Just like I couldn't live in a house that was totally decorated by an interior decorator who didn't have a clue as to what we like, I couldn't turn my garden over to a professional either. I like it with the mistakes and rough edges and I don't want it to be perfect. (And there is no chance of that ever.) I want it to look like nature planted it and not some landscaping company. To each his/her own.
I agree....
Growing a garden is like raising children. You wouldn't want to just dial in an age, press a button and ta-da! there is your 6 year old. Same with gardens.
I agree. A garden is an extension of the person who planted it, letting a bit of one's self in the landscape of it. A gardener is an artist with the land, a way to express yourself. :) Not two are alike :)
Misty--and you are the only one holding the paintbrush. You can add paint (friends plants) to you piece of art but you have the brush! Very Good Point! Marie
