While I was stripping bottom leaves off a whole bunch of flowers to put in water, this guy, or gal, almost ended as a squished mess all over my first two fingers and thumb. Yuckkkk. Anyone know what it is. Is it to be a lovely butterfly? or.....

That is a caterpillar of one of the Hawk Moths in the family Sphingidae, but I cannot help beyond that.
