Stupid me...

Paris, TX(Zone 8a)

I hope I'm not the only one stupid enough to do this kind of thing.

Back in may, I planted coleus seeds in my garden. I'd bought different plants, but since my garden is not mature, I was curious to see if I could grow something from seeds. I planted the seeds in between my other plants. I forgot about them until sometime later, when I was pulling weeds, it dawned on me that the weeds were actually coleus seedlings. Today, my husband said he was wondering why our coleus seemed to be growing thicker on one side of the garden than it was on the other, and I had to admit to him what I'd done.

has anybody else ever done something stupid like this? Please, confess and make me feel a little better about myself. lol

I don't spend much time pulling weeds, but I do plenty of stupid things! Especially when I decide to experiment, or I think what if I do this? I was so thrilled when my ornamental corn (3 - 150 foot rows) survived three weeks of horrible hail right after they declared. Reason? It was too muddy for me to pull weeds, so the careless weeds and pig weeds actaully protected the little darlings.

Now, I only have two rows, as I couldn't wade out too keep the weeds down until they had completely taken over the row by the pasture fence. Besdies, I thought "What if it hails again right after I pull those weeds?" So I didn't do it when I had the chance. Now I can't get to it from the other side either, and the weeds are just loving all that manure.

So now that there are only two rows, I am wondering how I can help them poollinate. I will be planting four more rows, but they can't help the first batch. ANYBODY WITH ANY SUGGESTIONS? I prefer open pollination, but since I won't need to save any seeds (bought a bunch), I am willin gto do anything. No hurry, they aren't very tall yet, will probably begin to tassle in September...

Feel better now jdee?

lol. I guess I do a little. Do you after reading my saga?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

not really, doesn't make me feel better at all cause I would do the same thing as you did, but I can't think of anyone who lets weeds choke out their corn because it might hail again chickllechickklechuckle
oh, well
at least one of us feels better, and the other just has to pray for good wind pollination

jdee,

I do just the opposite of you. O got a lot of seeds in round robins last winter and if the package said "sow freely" by golly that's what I did. I hesitate to pull any weeds up until I am absolutely sure that they ARE weeds. Well I finally had to break down and do the weeding just the other day. I found some weeds I could identify as such and started yanking. They had taken advantage of my ignorance....waaaayyy to long.

Worst thing I did so far was weed wack a couple stalks off my canna lilies. This after I told my dh he couldn't do it for fear of the very same thing. lol

JDee,

Nah, I never told him, and since he stays out of the flower gardens, he never knew the difference, LOL (He's afraid I will hand him a shovel and say "hoonnnneeee???)

I had some wonderful cheddar pinks and lilac pinks growing in my island bed until this spring...When I told Howie they were weeds and he yanked 'em. Aaaargh. I realized my folly when I saw a photo of the island bed and saw the lovely little flush of pink beneath my birdbath. No little flush this year!

I did the same thing with anomone's I planted 2 years ago. Pulled them all out in one area and when I moved on to the other side of the yard I realized these weeds looked just like the ones I just pulled. The bad part was the ones I left are just wonderful.

jdee, Let me tell you what I did:

For Christmas last year I got a perennial--it was a double dwarf campanula--I babied it all along in the house and almost killed it a couple of times. When it got nice enough outside--I planted it up under a pear tree. Well, one day I decided it wasn't growing too good in the shade, so I moved it. My DH got me some Round-up to kill dandelions with that were growing in my gardens and I forgot where I planted the dwarf campanula at and accidently sprayed it with the round-up. You guessed it--my campanula is DEAD! No more me babying it!!! haha Now you know you are not the only one.
