Any Suggestions for plant with Leatherleaf sedge?

I have an area that I have deceided to renovate. 5' x 5'
approximately, morning sun, afternoon shade until around 4-5
p.m. I would be happy with just perennials, but would love some added color to complement the sedge. I had thought possibly bergenia in front and pee wee oakleaf hydrangea possilby cannas in the back round, but I need other suggestions and ideas. Thank you so much! It is very hot here in Northern California right now!
