My New Island Garden

Princeton, IL(Zone 5a)

Wanted to show all of you the progress of my latest garden. I started it in March. The picture below shows the blue hose marking out a path between a garden I planted in 2003 against the house and what I call my Island Garden. I made the grass path four feet wide. I rolled on round up with a paint roller. That worked really well!

Please note the volunteer tree growth at the side of the lot. I think all of that grew up through a hedge and eventually killed off the hedge. I moved the plants below it and am taking those trees down now.

This picture shows the shape better as the grass is all dead now.

Here it is all ready to plant. I used the stepping stones through the garden so that I have room to work. Knowing me, there would be no where to walk if I didn't plan early!

This is the latest picture that I have back. I need to pick my film up at Walmart! Since this picture, I have filled it in much, much more. Will post more when I get further along!

Wow. That's progress. It looks wonderful. You must feel very happy with yourself every time you turn into your drive.

I'm gonna remember the hint of rolling roundup on with a paint roller, how smart of you to think of it. I've used the little foam paint brushes for this, never thought of a roller.

your island garden looks really great. good idea using the roller. will have to remember that.

Good work! I ALWAYS forget to allow pathways so I'm glad to see you thought "ahead"!

LimeyLisa, very nice. You have been working hard to get all that done. Donna

Glad that you all like it. When I am done taking the trees out, I will be putting another garden there. It will curve around with a four foot grass path as well. Can't wait to get that project ready to go! If I can get the trees and stumps out by fall, I'll do the actual garden next Spring!

Just got a bunch of pictures back from being developed. Below is a picture taken July 14 of the first couple hours of tree removal. I got most of the little stuff that day. The furthest most group to the left of the picture is actually four 6-10 inch trees. That is all that is left now to take down. The sunshine is finally getting to my garden. And oh the plans I have for that area!

How long did it take for the roundup to work...between rolling it on and the time you were able to put in your first plant?

Princeton, IL(Zone 5a)

I think it went about three weeks. I rolled twice, about a week apart. There was alot of rain and some areas didn't seem to react fast.
