Slugs

Slugs are eating my Hosta's.....I usually can slow them down with broken egg shells around the base of the plant, but this year, they musta bought boots for thier slimmy little feet, cause they are getting into my Hosta....

What do ya'all do to control slugs in your garden.....Help!

I use beer in shallow used tin pie pans. There was a thread sometime back showing a neat project for covering any slug trap. Cut 3 small sections of pvc pipe, put them in the ground leaving about 3" above ground. Put a stepping stone on the pipes and slide the beer container under the strpping stone. Protects the beer from rain and pets. It doesn't have to be emptied every day as the dead slugs in the beer draw more slugs.

I also read that a ring of pinecones around hostas works.

edited for spelling.

CoCo sent me a website of using plastic soda pop bottles. Unfortunately I deleted the website. But you cut them in half and slide the top half into the bottom with the lid part going in first. Staple the halfs together. Then you put beer into the bottle as bait. The concept is to keep other critters out but letting the bad ones in.

Here is the link Sledder was talking about.

Sprinkling Epsom salts around your plants will also help in keeping the slugs away or even laying some rough sandpaper down will also keep slugs away from your plants

Thank you one and all for the new ways to conrol slugs. I knew about the beer thing, but hate to have these obnoxious pie tins showing in my garden with beer in them. Maybe I could hide them under the leaves or something, but I must now take desperate measures now.

CoCo, thank you for the bottle idea. Can not believe I don't remember that as I have Garden Gate going back probably 5 years now. Will try both ideas. Once again..thank you ....

i just read in a magazine that if you see what appears to be white grains of rice on the slugs don't do anything because it indicates that a parasitic wasp has set in.
