Sanguinea Seedlings in Wisconsin ..........

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

............ I kept 2 seedlings , just 'cause I love the prehistoric look of them and those wonderfully sculptured velvety leaves are a treat to see and touch.

...... one of them has kinda stalled out already , but this is to be expected in this zone , not what is needed to grow Sangs. to a healthy , mature plant.

The second one is almost 5 ft tall and while doing the morning top-knot check ( aka growing-point ), this one started looking interesting. She was real tight and crowded , almost looks like a head of fuzzy lettuce ...

This morning she loosened up a little .......Looks like a Triple 'Y' to me ('-')

Got a little closer this afternoon ....... Ver-rr-ry interesting ('-')
Looks like 4 buds ,, only 2 visible from this angle.

That's a very healthy-looking plant, Shirley! It shows great promise - I hope you get some flowers! I would not even try to grow sanguinea - I don't think it would like my climate at all :-(

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I never would have believed it Scoot. Yours looks better than mine and I am in sang country!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

That looks great,I'm impressed
can't wait for the blooms

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Thanks you guyz,
.................Just keeping my finger crossed that this funky cool weather we have been having this year keeps going for a while.
If the temps ever get back to the norm for this area , I'll get pictures of the blooms dropping off :'(

No heartbreak here, I'm just so pleased to see one get this far along.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

We have a Country Thunder Concert going on right now just down the road. All the 'strange' sounds in the night air woke up my Monster White ...... lol
My first MW bloom ......

scooterbug - I am from Ireland and the sanguinea is my first brug ever. I raised 2 from seed. The bigger one I planted in the ground and the smaller in a pot which constantly needs potting on. The one in the pot has grown bigger than the one in the ground and, to my excitement, has just started to 'Y'. I'm just wondering how long it will take before I see buds. I very excited about this!

Great looking sang scooter. I sure hope it blooms for you soon. and please post photos....
Prudence, yours looks very healthy too, you should have buds in no time since it has y'ed.
Prudence, where in Ireland are you? I'll be there in Sept for an overseas home show, in Dublin, then Cork and then Kildare, then off to belfast. Are you anywhere near these places? I can send you a pass to get in free and I'll bring some brug seeds if we can meet up....

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Hi Sue. Glad to see your sang is still making it in Ireland. Just to relate my experience with one....mine Y'd and Y'd, and Y'd and I never did get a bud from it. In my case I think it was the summer heat. It was on the deck in the sun and I think the poor thing cooked. Anyway, it's good to see you back on the brug forum. Nice sang pictures ladies!!

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Thanks for the 'props' Pebble .
Sue ....You go girl !!
Hope you get blooms on yours. Is your weather good for Sanguineas ? I've always wanted to visit Ireland .

Our weather has NOT been normal this year , we have had unusual rain and colder temps. This phenomenon has been experienced over may States this year.

.............. I would hesitate to guess that I will probably never see this happen again in this part of the country . I expect that if our temps get back to where they normally are , my poor Sang will literally melt before my eyes.
It was such a surprise that when I could see the Y's there already were 4 buds in place.
.............Both plants are growing in the ground here.

Good luck,
>^,,^< SB

County Roscommon, Ireland(Zone 8a)

Pebble - I'm in County Roscommon which is in the middle of the Republic (between Cork and Belfast!!). I think your travels will bypass Roscommon but let me know if your route takes you near Roscommon. Thanks you for kind offer of the tickets and seeds - it would be good to meet a fellow DGer.

Shirley, I've been pretty quiet on the forums although I pop up now and again! Hope your garden is blooming! I will e-mail you.

Scooterbug - the weather is temperate here - warm and wet. I have had a bad time fighting rust fungus on all my plants but I think I have beaten it. The sang in the ground got rust badly and I had to cut loads of leaves of it. The one in the pot didn't get it due to loads of copper fungicide sprayed on it. It is kept in semi-shade and get the sun for a couple of hours a day. I will keep you posted!

Sue

County Roscommon, Ireland(Zone 8a)

I have just discovered buds on my sang - I can't believe it! I just hope it flowers before the weather turns for the worst.

Shirley, the brug seeds you sent me are doing well (PB x inca sun, big yella and PB x VP) but no 'Y's yet on those but fingers crossed.

Sue

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

hip hip hooray Prudence....I hope the flowers of the sang will be stunning for you!!

be sure to post pictures when they bloom

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Please Prudence, do post sang pics. We do not get to see too many around here on Daves.

Hey Jeanne, why aren't you posting any this year?

Crestview, FL(Zone 7b)

that's it.. rub it in us poor folks in the humid south that can't grow these........ *sigh*

Can't wait to see both of your pictures of the blooms.. I'll be really in zone envy then

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Love that foliage! Keep on posting.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

When you get blooms on any of the seedingss, please show us. I'm sure Kell would be interested in seeing her Big Yella seedling pictures and I am always interest in seeing what my crosses look like.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

MzM, Not to have Zone envy for me my dear.
We are just having Freaky Cool Zone Weather this summer. Back into the low 50's for night temps again for a while ..... this is a good thing .

Sue, Terrific news about your Sanginuea setting buds. Anticipation sets in big time , knowing that we probably will not see one open but then there is *that* chance ?

Glad I have someone to commiserate with now ..... LOL

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Shirley, Are Sang cuttings difficult to root ?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Scoot, I have no idea. I can't grow the dang things.

Sue, how are your temps in Ireland now?

Kell, my sang is late in flowering this year, I'll take some pix soon.

Mukwonago, WI(Zone 5a)

Scoot...They appear to root just about the same as any of the Brugs do for me here. (a few miles from you). The Sangs seem to root better around this time of the year as opposed to later or even in early winter for me???
I am so ANXIOUS to see blooms on that thing. I've had one (Inca Queen) for 3 years now. Have to take cuts every summer because it never blooms for me. I've gotten to where I even drag the goofy thing into the AC'd house during the heat waves-duh:) I have been asking around for some info on just where to look for the bud formation on this plant but still have no idea where it should appear. It seems like the logical place is not where the buds form....I am unsure about this though. Just like Brugie's plant .....every time I think I am getting a bud....the darn thing would unfurls in a few days and then goes on to become another side shoot with it's own leaf cluster???? It looks like a sphere right now...if you ask me. LOL
Oh Scoot.... I sure hope yours does bloom for you. Then all of us not real familiar with this plant will get to see it's growth specifics.

BTW.....Still looking for another Maya? I have some good sized basal shoots coming up on mine right now and will probably only root one of 'em for next year. PLMK if you need/want one???

Renee....... I loved your old name!!
Listen, I got your email. AOL is not letting me send most emails. They flower just like any other brug as I recall. I haven't gotten a flower on mine for awhile! Yours look just great.

Mukwonago, WI(Zone 5a)

Thanks for writing Kell. I was wondering if you even got my email??? Funny things...those ISP's - HUH?

As for this goofy Sang of mine. This is the last year that I'm gonna pamper it. Especially when my limited space could be put to better use:) It's either Flowers or Bust ! :)

Who could pin a name on you/me ???? (grin)

Hey Reneé, good to see you.

Thanks for the offer of the Maya but ada had mercy on me and sent me one last winter.I relly love it and the SnowBank , the foliage has such different textures.

OK , I grabbed my trusty stepstool and just took these pictures.

The buds seem to lay right amongst the leaves

I can see a few by looking up under the brug. They do not arch down like I expected. At least not yet .

This is the crown growth. Would be nice to get a hard cutting from this zone =)

BEAUTIFUL...Scoot ! Thanks for dragging out that trusty ladder of yours. Can't tell you how much those last pics helped me. I'm telling you...I think I have a male Sang here (grin) The darn thing just keeps growing exponentially w/o a hint of anything 'bud-looking' like your shot depicts.
This 'fella' has a reprive for this year only. If it doesn't flower...then I think it will be time for replacement genes.

Can't wait to see the color!!! Looks like it won't be long now....It should be beautiful....esp. with the cool weather pattern we're having this year :) Good Sleeping though-ay?

County Roscommon, Ireland(Zone 8a)

Scoot - I't exciting stuff alright. My buds are tiny at the moment. Are you fertilising and how often?

Shirley - the weather here is nice and bearable - no scorching heat at the moment. The sang is in partial shade and get the sun (when we have it!) from midday to about 4.00pm. I am planning on going away for most of September so I hope I don't miss anything!!

Thanks to you all for your encouragement. Pics will definitely be posted if we reach the final stage!

Sue

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Sue, Fert around here is hit or miss situation..
..............Except for granular Rose Food ,I don't use salt base fert very often but do use a lot of non-chemical things. The dry rose food was necessary because of all the rain we've had .
BTW, my Sangs are in the ground , which makes a big difference in feeding requirements.
=)

Still hanging in there ;-)

I'm so excited for you!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Can't wait to see that thing open. Hope nothing happens to it before then.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Ohmigosh....lucky (talented) you! I had grown these from seed about 5 years ago.
They grew into nice plants about 3' high....then the (normal!) heat and humidity of the summer came, and they (as you said!) 'melted' on me!

Wish I'd have waited until last winter to sow my seeds!!
Good for you!
Will be waiting for updated photos!

(PS...sounds like you're going to get your wish for continued cool weather for the next few days, at least....weird, isn't it?!)

Mukwonago, WI(Zone 5a)

GOSH Scoot....You are really giving this plant the TLC treatment !!! Man...that thing is really taking it's good-natured time - isn't it? Good thing it's gonna remain cool around here for the next week. I'd give ANYTHING to help you to get your little bud it to it's highly anticipated debut. Even if it means wearing a sweatshirt during the day - :)

Scoot..Now I am NOT sure at what I am seeing on my sang today. I hope its a bud. If it weren't for your close-up pics I'd probably not even notice this little thing sticking out in one of the leaf clusters. Could you take a look at this pic for me? Whatcha think???? Please tell me its a bud - LOL Seriously, I hope you can verify what it is. After all..........You are now the Wisconsin Sang Expert you know (smile)

Thanks

Hey Renee,
Sorry about the slow reply but I have been 'Puter-less for 10 days ;'(

Looks like a bud to me and a good one at that.

Seems to me that the ones that set like that do hang on , where as the dozens of little ones along the leaf axils (sp?) all fall off in a few days.

I have 3 more 'good' buds but as long as it takes theses lil buggers to grow I doubt if they will make it. Unless we have a warmer Fall weather trend . *crossing fingers & toes*

Whew , feels good to be back.
Hugs
