I tried lemon lollipop for the first time in my shade containers and am very pleased. To me, the plant is so cheerful!
Pleased with this new pick.
Yes, the plant is also called a Golden Shrimp Plant. I bought the plant on a whim. It was placed in the "for shade perennials" but did not have a species indicator. I searched the internet for a name of the species and happended upon this wonderful website!
I hope to take a cutting before our first freeze and grow it indoors. Any suggestions on how to best propagate this wonderful plant?
Ohhh- were did you buy that? I am in Dallas and Abilene this week and would love to have that!
How beautiful. And it grows in the shade? I have very little sun, and would love some pretty flowers like that.
I have one that I bought several years ago in FLA and it is doing great. I bring it inside over the winter and back out once the temps are high enough. I wish they were available around here, I'd love another. Do they come in other colors, do you know??
Deb
It's a Justicia: http://plantsdatabase.com/b/Acanthaceae/Justicia/
Cerinthe is a similar-looking plant: http://plantsdatabase.com/b/Boraginaceae/Cerinthe/
daisy-you may take a stem cutting if you wish. I saw a few at Northhaven gardens. They also have all their roses 40% off this week.
I live in the Dallas area, too (Plano). I have two of these shrimp plants in my front beds and although I bought them as an annuals, they have come back strong and beautiful for the third year in a row now. From reading, I understand that the plants with the reddish color blooms like I have are hardier than the yellow. Daisy, if you have a chance to go to Northhaven Gardens while you are in town, it will be worth your trip. It is one of the better garden centers in Dallas.
Oh- thanks for letting me know where! I will try and get there on Tuesday- I love seeing garden centers in other places!
Daisy, did you get by Northhaven? I agree with Trunnels. NHG is my favorite nursery in this area. I spend many lunches there.
Sweezel, NHG had a big iris show and sale this past weekend but I just couldn't get down there. Did you get a chance to see it?
Nope, getting down there on the weekends is nearly impossible. I would love to attend some of their events, but they are always on Saturdays. Of course, it is nice going during lunchtime and just getting to browse without the crowds.
What area of Plano do you live trunnels?
No- I didn't get there because we made into Dallas just in time for the big floods last week!! Darnit!
But we will be back soon so I will check it out. Thanks for recommending it!
Sweezel, I live in the older part of Plano, just west of Central Expressway, off 15th and west of Collin Creek Mall. I'm in an older subdivision between Plano Senior High and Vines High School, surrounded by 15th, Independence, Park and Custer.
I know the exact area. When we were looking for a larger house 2 years ago, I did a whole lot of looking in your area. My husband and I really love the old ranch style homes. We actually tried to put a bid on a house over on Deep Valley Trail, but someone beat us to it. I still have a picture of that backyard on my computer and sometimes wish we would have gotten the house. I looked hard at the whole area bordered by Alma, Plano Rd, Spring Creek and Coit. It was hard to find five bedrooms though and we ended up deciding it would be better not to pull the kids out of McKinney Schools.
I love where we are. My youngest is a junior at Plano Senior High (started school today) and both of my other two daughters graduated from PSH. The homes are older but at least we have huge trees (for my shade garden) and the houses all have a lot of potential. We had four bedrooms but only needed three so we remodeled and turned the bedroom that backed up to the master into a large closet. Where are you in McKinney? My daughter and her husband live in McKinney, right off of Custer Road in Stonebridge Ranch. I'm not familiar with all parts of McKinney but I would love to live in one of the older homes in town with the big porches.
We live in Stonebridge Ranch also. We are around Eldorado Pkwy and Lake Forest Parkway in one of the oldest subdivisions, so the trees are getting larger. I still miss my 15 mature trees at our old house. I had 5 pecan trees that were 40 years old that I left behind. Stonebridge is a nice place for the kids with the extra trails, lake and pools, though. There are about 20,000 people in Stonebridge now though so the pools do get packed.
Wow, I didn't know there were that many people in Stonebridge now. I bet you did hate to give up those nice pecan trees. I know there are quite a few big trees in Stonebridge that were saved during the development. That is a really nice area. My son-in-law is a biker (bicycle) and wanted to live in Stonebridge because of the hilly terrain and wide streets. I would love to live up that way but I work downtown Dallas and the drive is far enough as it is! :)
Well, I live up there and work downtown. LOL
I moved to McKinney almost 7 years ago and have been doing the 30+ mile drive since then. The things you do for love - I followed my husband (boyfriend at the time) out here from Dallas. Traffic is another reason we wanted to move to Plano.
There were some trees saved but a lot of the area was farm land so not quite enough to save. On the east side of SR where I live, the trees in the wide medians and on the trails that run next to the road have grown up in the 15 years since they were planted so it's not too bad.
You don't work for a law firm, do you? It would be funny if we knew each other. I work for Jenkens & Gilchrist.
LOL, that would be pretty cool, but nope, I work at a financial firm at The Crescent. I am not actually in Downtown, but just on the other side of it in Uptown. I would rather be in the central area though. The lunch selection is much worse than when I worked at the Renaissance tower.
I worked in the Crescent for about three years. You're right about the lunch selection. I'm in One Fountain Place so not much better. Always have to get out in my car to go somewhere for lunch.
trunnels- Sorry to jump in here but are you related to Michael, Dorothy, Matt, etc?
I can see where you are coming from. One Fountain Place is kinda separated from the other highrises. I loved working at Renaissance tower because it is part of the tunnel system and more in the thick of things. I loved how I could go all the way to the Nation's Bank building (Bank of America now?) and eat at Enchilada's without having to get out on the street. It's been 8 years so I don't even know whats down there any more.
Grrr... I hate having to get in my car and drive if I want to spend less than $7.00 on lunch.
Daisyavenue, I'm not related to them as far as I know. Runnels is my married name and my husband is an only son. There may be more Runnels out there, though, that I don't know. My husband is from Dennison, Texas.
Sweezel, I don't think Enchiladas is downtown anymore. I hit Mia's (on Lemmon at Wycliff) at least once a week. If you haven't tried it for mex, you should!
O'well, trunnels- had to ask! They are good friends of my family and one of the sons lives in the Richardson area. : ) I thought that maybe you were his daughter.
My husband is from the Sherman/Denison area. I will have to ask him if he knows any Runnels.
I have been to Mia's once. I think I had fajita's and they were pretty good. My favorite place is Omega's in Deep Ellum. It's a little hole in the wall on Crowdus. They have great mexican for a good price and Omega is a sweetheart. Plus, you get a small cup of queso with the chips and free flan or sopapilla with lunch. I also go to Eatzi's a lot.
Now I am craving mexican. Time for lunch...
Wow. I'll have to try Omega's. Maybe tomorrow! Sometimes I do Eatzi's for take home in the evening.
Daisyavenue, you might ask them if they know John Runnels from Dennison. He may have family he isn't aware of! LOL
Okay- I will ask!
