Annual Dave's Garden photo contest

Northern California, CA

Not shooting from this end Terry, but dare I venture the thought that the very large contingent of Brug afficionados that frequent Dave's would overwhelm any Tropical entry with their dedicated enthusiasm to their favorite Brugs?

That would eliminate a very large number of truly beautiful plants from competition.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Ooh, good point. Maybe there should be a Brugs category. Or, dare I say, Brugs and Daturas.

Ducking and running for cover!

There already is a brugs and daturas category. In fact, most of the ones that Terry mentioned are already there. Go take a look and see what is missing.

Oops. I'd only add Pets, then.

But there isn't a "flowers" one. I hate seeing our perennials and annuals mixed up in a category with birds and pets. This is a garden website, and many of us grow "flowers" that aren't tropicals or brugs because we live in the North.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Sound great, I knew I will never win LOL never complain any of it but it is fun to see who is Winner! ;0)
Maybe use my pets, I try do my best.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

What I was trying to do was find ways to combine/rename existing categories, and keep the total to under a dozen, while adding some of the good ideas suggested above ;o)

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

Well, in the end- people are going to vote for the picture they like- some like tropicals and some dont- it's a matter of taste, right?

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Can I vote twice for *****PETS*****?
Pati

P.S. My plants are just average, but I have BEAUTIFUL Pets!

I didn't even know there was a photo contest last year. Just happened up on this thread. Is the link to the 2003 contest the same categories for this year or is there a separate listing for 2004? I don't usually visit all the forums I have selected, so it's mostly my fault & I have a slow dial-up connection, so it takes me longer to download & look at posts & pictures.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Paul,

I was thinking about that photo you took of the bird. I sure hope you enter that in the contest - it was a GREAT pic!

Karrie :)

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks Dave, the excitement begins, Hurrah, I'm in, I'm new, have no idea what happened last year, want pictures, We got lot's of pictures. Just let us know what to do.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

I'm in... can people be with the plants in the pics?

My kids love to show off what they plant!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

hanna, I think you need to click the extras button, the Daves Photo Contests, then 2004, and submit in the categories from there.

Irving (Dallas area), TX(Zone 8a)

Karrie, which bird photo are you thinking about?

Crossville, TN

Are we allowed to enter pictures that have already been posted on DG? Or do they have to be "new"?? Jo

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I believe either's fine, Jo.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

New or old so long as they were not previously entered in the contests is what Dave told us last year.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Yep - what Zany said ;o)

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

I believe we should focus on flowers and gardens, and leave pets and people off of the list.

Trish

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

unless they are in a garden LOL

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

I'd like to see a pets and people section...pets are usually in the top 10 of forums for daily posting...cutting out the pet forum sure cuts out a lot of your subscribers & supporters.
Some of the pet folks would really be grateful to be included.
Thanks
MsC.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Ditto, MsC.

I think Trish has a good point there.

I don't think anyone is cut out by restricting it to plants and gardens, we're here because of the gardening aren't we? :)

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Some of us come for BOTH...my two main hobbies are plants and critters and this is the only place I know that combines both interest...plus the really nice people here too.:)

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

There are also folks who are unable to do much gardening anymore, but are active not only in gardening discussions, but in those regarding their pets and other animals. What does it hurt to have such a category?

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

There's nothing left for me to say...MsC and GW have said it in the best possible way. Next to husbands and children, plants and pets are the closest to our hearts!! Now I'm a widow and my children are grown, so my DG friends grow more precious every day. THREE CHEERS FOR US!!!!!
Pati

New Braunfels, TX

Fabulous prizes?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Fame and adulation!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i just mentioned people because I usually take pictures with my kids in them. Among other things, it gives a size reference. But in the case of many gardens, they are breathtaking all by themselves...

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

is there a deadline?? i always miss these! :(

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

When will we know what has been decided about adding the pets and people sections?
Where will the guidelines and deadlines be posted?
Can you enter a photo for someone too shy to enter it themselves?
Can the same picture be entered in more than one catergory?

Thanks Dave!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I guess we just keep an eye on the contest entry page(s): http://davesgarden.com/contest/2004/

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks GW, didn't know it was there, DUH!

MsC, guess no decision has been made on the Pets and People, *SIGH*. I did notice that the second largest number of entries had nothing to do with plants: Bird, Butterflies, etc. *grin*, maybe there's hope!
Pati

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Okay, after nosing around the contest categories a bit more, can I make another suggestion?

Instead of Tropicals, Brugs, morning glory, roses, lilies daylilies and iris, can we have one contest for flowers, with sections for:

best brug
best Datura
best MG
best rose
best lily
best daylily
best iris
best tropical flower
best hardy perennial flower
best annual flower
best overall flower image

That would definitely consolidate the contests ;o)

Birmingham, AL(Zone 8a)

Terry I totally think you have a great idea there - I was looking at the cats as they are now and for some of them I'm not sure where to put my pics.

Could we add a Best Foliage Image for coleus, ferns, etc? There's more to life than flowers ya know! Esp. since we have our new Foliage Forum...

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

I vote YES for the Foliage catagory! But then, I seem to vote yes for everything, don't I? LOL
Pati

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

I like Terry's idea! Everyone north/south, tropical/perennial will be able to submit photos.

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Wasn't there a contest for the Tallest Castor Bean? Or did I go to sleep and wake up someplace else?
:o)
Dee

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Says Dee, "And you were there...And you...And you, too, Aunti Em!"

I don't remember ones for specific plants, but maybe I'm wrong.
