Look at all the wonderful pictures from last year, gman. That's about all I know...I'm a newbie since the last one too! But it looks fun!

Hmm, let me think....

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I was thinking we should expand the categories. Not everyone lives in the south and grows tropicals, etc.......

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

gman, you just have to look at the old photos in previous contests where we vote in many categories. Someone wins... just accolades but a pleasure none trhe less.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

With so many new members since last year it will be a great chance to have some of them show us their stuff! And if you thought it was hard to decide who to vote for last time.... this ought to be even more fun.

So all of you New members, ( you old timers too ) get those entries in and let's make this an even grander contest season than ever!

Irving (Dallas area), TX(Zone 8a)

I agree with Karrie - more categories would make for shorter lists!

No Daylilies :-(
No Iris :-(
No Hosta :-(

These are such active forums, with so many photos being shared, don't you think they should have their own categories in the photo contest?

Okay, I'll add those.

dave

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

Thanks Dave!!

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

I think we should have a tree and shrub category also

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I've always thought we should have an "Annual & Perennials" entry, as we Northerners depend on those to fill our gardens.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

What about one for foliage plants?

I don't quite understand, is this contest for good photography or good plants?

It's for good photography, and I don't want to flood it with too terribly many categories. What we have now is about as many as I'd like to have.

A couple of questions/suggestions:

Last year's contest ended on Halloween I think...when is the cutoff for this year's contest?

Could you add to the main contest page that it's for good photography? I know this question came up last year also.

Thanks Dave!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Well, I shall not complain, since I probably won't be able to enter the contest this year anyways. Our digital is getting old, and isn't focusing very well. Not sure when we will get a newer, better one. We've been comparing, and pricing, but it takes awhile before Russ takes the plunge. I know whatever he decides on will be a good one.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Those of you who hold yourselves back...You can get great pictures with a cheap digital, too. Go for it - just shoot a bunch and see what you get! :) You're not out any money for trying, so work within the limitations and you might just surprise yourself.

Thanks Dave for the explanation.

Sorry everyone, I wasn't putting a dampener on your suggestions, I was just wondering what the competition was about. (it might have been me who asked that question last year too)

GW

Thanks but I won't be competing this year again, I have a decent camera, I'm just not up to standard (even with a tripod;)

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Dave - I support the limitation of categories. It was a BIG job trying to vote last year! Whew!

Sure would be nice next year to mix it up a bit though. Instead of the same ole, same ole maybe we could do Wildflowers, Wildlife, Garden Pals (pets, kids, friends etc in the garden), Bulbs, Flowering Shrubs just to name a few off the top of my head. It seems when the contests are in late summer we forget all the beauties that burst forth heralding spring! Food for thought for another day.

Can we add a pet photo under the Miscellaneous category?

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

YES for Pets!!!!!!
Pati

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

So where would you place Annuals & Perennials?

Winnetka, CA(Zone 9b)

I can't see all the winners from last years contest. I get a warning message. What I could see is beautiful!

Do the pictures have to be a specific size?

How long do we have to submit pictures before the voting starts?

Thanks for a great website, Allison

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I know I'm probably going to get shot down on a few, but how about:

Brugs & Tropicals
Container Gardens
Flowers
Woody Ornamentals
Landscape
Vegetables
Birds, Butterflies, Bees and Bugs
Daylilies
Lilies
Hosta
Iris
Garden Friends & Miscellaneous

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Pets
People

?

Annuals and perennials sounds a little broad since so many plants fit into those categories. But going into too many sub-groups could be daunting, too.

Hi, Allison - welcome! Pictures submitted are typically 640x480 or 800x600. DG does resize very large images to 640x480 automatically, but if you start with a resized one to begin with, your own upload time is much shorter and you have control over what size it becomes.
