Oh no, what have I done? LOL

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

I am one of those people that if there is a mosquito within 10

miles -- it knows where I am. Even sprays have limited

success with me. When I used the "big gun" sprays ( heavy

DEET), then they will bite me on my eyelids or some other

weird part that wasn't sprayed.

Sooooooo, I read about a new mosquito barrier repellent that

is 1. organic and 2. last for up to 5 weeks. The instructions

said that the strong HERBAL scent would dissipate in an hour

or two.

Well, I got home last night and there was a box on the front

porch. When I picked it up, I could smell the stuff through

the box. When I opened it up, the container had been put in

a zip lock bag - - because it smelled so badly no doubt. With

it smelling that badly, I couldn't put it inside my garage - - - -

-so I went ahead and sprinkled it on the yard. After all, the

strong HERBAL scent would dissipate in an hour or two.

Right?????

WRONG!!!! My gosh, my whole yard smells

like...............................................................................

....................................................................................

....................................................................................

.......................................GARLIC!! Overwhelming - -

highly concentrated garlic.

I'll be happy if the odor dies down in a week or two! Even the

dogs won't go outside!!! Yes, the same dogs that would roll

in poop or on a dead animal.

Do I have mosquitos? Only one was brave enough to fly into

the yard. And the Transylvanian consulate called this

morning to see why my address had been added to the

Vampire "don't go there" list.

Just call me Stinky.........Nat

How funny!

I am glad you could laugh about it. If it were I, my reaction would be unprintable.

If it works well as a dog and human repellent, I wonder if it works on Rabbits. My mortal enemy is always on my mind. :-)

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Drop, I believe that garlic works as a rabbit repellent also.

Thanks, nathalyn.

Please let me know when the "herbal" smell finally dissipates.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

So THAT's what that smell was, wafting from the east this morning! Peeee-yewwwwwww!

(Just kidding! But I thought I did hear something on the local news - east TN was reporting some type of garlicky fog this morning ...hehehehehe)

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Hey Terry! Don't mess with me or I'll send all my skeeters west to Murfreesboro.......

Seriously, if this stuff really works and IF the smell does back off, it will be worth it to get some relief from the mosquitos.
Will keep you all posted on my unscientific findings.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Well I can't smell it in CA so it cant be that bad lol. DS was a mosquito magnet when he was younger. Got the organic stuff. Supposed to be just the thing. Well, have you ever been trapped in a hot car with a child that reeks of citronella and red cedar oil. Poor little guy. Poor Mom. Poor neighbors. Better than MEGA garlic I know but I had to sell the car to get rid of the smell lol. I hope after all that-It works.

ROFLMBO - gotta wipe that pc screen again...

This story sort of reminds me of my trip to Palm Springs a few years ago. DH was in a conference, and I just went along for fun. It was in March, and the temps were in the 90's. Prior to going, I should have visited a tanning bed, to get a base, but was too busy and didn't.

Hanging out at the pool, yacking with other women, sipping on drinks, the minutes turned into hours and did I fry! It was real bad. We were out having dinner, before my flight out and a local noticed my burn and suggested White Vinegar. So we went out and bought some, and I washed it all over my burn. Of course, I was probably a little heat stroked as well, because I didn't think about the smell and the trip home.

I feel so bad for the people that had to sit near me on that plane. I stunk like a pickle - really really bad. When I changed flights in Seattle, people were looking at me really weird, like "what is HER problem" or "ewwwwwwwww".

From now on, if I ever get a bad burn again (hope not) I will use the vinegar, but I will stay home.

OK, you win. LOL.

May be a sign that said "It's only VINEGAR." might help.

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

Wonder if it would keep Deer outta my garden?

Nat, please email me, where did you order it from?

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Will email you Melissa...Nat

Update: The smell is better, but there is still a slight odor as of tonight. I can tell that there is a reduction in mosquitos - - but I did not treat the entire yard. And so, then I move away from the treated area - - there are mosquitos. But in treating the perimeter around my porches, it has made a noticeable difference.

I think the 'Queen of Poop' is expanding ;>}

OMG that whole thread had me laughing out loud, truly
LOL-ing from beginning to end, especially the part about "these are the same dogs..." That is hilarious.

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

How open are your sinuses Nat? I bet you can smell everything when you leave your yard. LOL

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Funny story, Nat! I love garlic so I probably wouldn't mind the yard smell... I think. I'm a mosquito magnet, too, and I just got some new and maybe useful information.

I'll make another thread so I don't hijack this one, but will come back and post a link here.

I wonder what you ordered? I use garlic powder to deter rodents, dogs, etc. from digging or chewing on anything. You only have to do it once and either it stays with the plant or they don't want to risk it because it works.

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Janet, I was REALLY paranoid when I read on the instructions that if you get this stuff on you that you should rinse it off with hydrogen peroxide, followed by baking soda and water, then followed by soap and wate - - to remove the odor.

And Darius, this was not the good smell of garlic cooking - - this was really pungent, reminding me of the sharp odor when a skunk sprays.

On the container, it said that it contained garlic - - but it was a low percentage (or so I thought). Makes me wonder what some of the sprays smell like that are 90% garlic.
