OK, I know I've mentioned this before, but I have found yet another hilarious literal translation for a plant on the web. I am researching our local Alaska Cotton, a sedge, and many of the websites were not in English. This one was pretty hilarious: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=it&u=http://www.giardinaggio.it/Vspontanea/ERIOPHORUMSCHEUCHZERI.asp&prev=/search%3Fq%3DEriophorum%2BScheuchzeri%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26safe%3Doff
Website Translations
It becomes a man and lives on the land of soccer? lol!
Here's another hoot. Googles would like to know if I meant Eriophorum 'rustoleum'... yes, that's it... the plant with the white paint that won't rust during the rainy season in the soccer field! http://images.google.com/images?q=Eriophorum%20russeolum&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&sa=N&tab=wi
Not just a man, but a voluminous man...hehehehe
(Guessing it might have been in Italian before Google mangled, errr tranlated it?)
Hehehehe
Here is another: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://www.gut-im-bild.at/pages2/Eriophorum-vaginatum.htm&prev=/search%3Fq%3DEriophorum%2Bvaginatum%26start%3D60%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN This variety of cotton grass is apparently 'absent-minded until rare'. I suppose it wanders off into the tundra marshes, forgets how to get back, expires before propagating, and becomes rare. You can learn alot from these websites.

Here's one from the Plants Database.
According to Trish... these poor vines have a bad case of gas. :-O But all is not lost......apparently their gas makes them grow exceedingly fast! hehehe
*ducks*
Crimson... now you've got me curious, but I your link takes me to the PDB homepage. Can you link directly to the page?
ack LOL okay hang on... sorry hehe.

garden wife glad i checked this board out to.. funny..
I must mention the champion of all mangled English...
http://engrish.com
Have fun, and wear your Depends!
These are delicious :)
My 2 granddaughters started school in France in a little village school. My daughter and her husband don't speak french and the teacher doesn't speak much english (they had teachers in specially for the girls!!) So the teacher sent any necessary notes about outings or special events by email which he put through a web translator.
They were a hoot both ways!
My daughter sent one about Anna and Zoe's bus passes and it translated as "passing Anna was Zoe's bus" LOLOL
That's so funny, Phil... I bet you get a real chuckle over those emails! I do some administrative work for a local public radio station, and they recently purchased a digital recorder to record board meetings so that I can transcribe them later. It was suggested that the recorder could somehow be translated into a computer to transcribe the minutes... I'd like to try that... it would afford me a couple hours of amusement!
:)
Can just imagine how mangled those minutes would become!!
Our common expressions would play havoc with a translator... such as 'a real can of worms'. Perhaps we need to start learning to speak computer translation so we can understand this new language.
My friend Angie and I like to feed song lyrics into the translator at Babelfish. Translate them from English to another language, and then from that language back to English. It's hilarious!
For instance...
Some enchanted evening
You may see a stranger,
you may see a stranger
Across a crowded room
And somehow you know,
You know even then
That somewhere you'll see her
Again and again.
Some enchanted evening
Someone may be laughin',
You may hear her laughin'
Across a crowded room
And night after night,
As strange as it seems
The sound of her laughter
Will sing in your dreams.
Who can explain it?
Who can tell you why?
Fools give you reasons,
Wise men never try.
Some enchanted evening
When you find your true love,
When you feel her call you
Across a crowded room,
Then fly to her side,
And make her your own
For all through your life you
May dream all alone.
Once you have found her,
Never let her go.
Once you have found her,
Never let her go!
if translated to Spanish, and then from the Spanish back to English, becomes...
A certain enchanted afternoon
you can see a foreigner,
you you can see a foreigner
through fourth tightened
and you to know somehow,
you even know then
that somewhere you'll sees repeated times it.
A certain enchanted afternoon
somebody can be laughin',
You can hear his laughin'
Through fourth and of one night tightened after the night,
as strange as it looks like
the sound of his laughter will sing in his dreams.
Who can explain it?
Who can say porqué to him?
The idiots never give the reasons him,
attempt of the wise men.
A certain enchanted afternoon when you find your love true,
when you feel your call you through fourth tightened,
later flies to its side,
and the its life does his to him own
for everything to traverse
that you can only dream everything.
Once you have found it,
déjela never goes.
Once you have found it,
déjela never goes!
Don't even get me started on songs from "The Sound of Music"! :D
LOLOLOL too funny :D
Oh, Gardenwife, I have moistened undergarments! How funny. Sounds like great fun on a rainy afternoon in front of the computer!
Weez....
This looks like a job for absorbant pads.
(Or, if you please, Esto parece un trabajo para los cojines absorbentes...This seems a work for the absorbent cushions)
::giggling helplessly::
My poor chair will never be the same...

Translating lyrics or poetry is such a great idea! What a laugh! It reminds me of the old Days of Saturday Night Live when the Coneheads spoke.
