I am quite new at gardening. About 6 weeks ago I planted some new shrubs. The very night I planted we had terrible rains and the whole area flooded. I was rather worried about this but they seemed to come through it fine. I even noticed new leaves after about 7-10 days.
Well after about 6 weeks or so I am seeing very small yellow or grayish spots on the leaves. Some leaves are almost completely discolored. I do not see any bugs anywhere but the underside of the leaves are almost powdery. Whatever it is seems to wipe right off. Can anyone tell me what this might be and what to do about it? Sorry I don't have a picture to help identify what I am seeing.
Something wrong with Burning Bushes
It sounds like powdery mildew. Not uncommon in humid hot weather. Give the bushes a good washing with some soapy water with a bit of alcohol mixed in it. Make sure it dries well before dark.
Jerry Baker has a tonic for this too. 4 tbsp. baking soda, 2 tbsp. Murphy's oil soap, 1 gallon warm water. Mix and pour into a handeld spray bottle. He recommends removing all mildewed leaves and putting them into your carry off type trash, NOT in the compost pile.
Oh thank you Leaflady. That sounds pretty simple and all stuff I have readily available. I will try this tomorrow.
It hasn't been terribly hot yet here but it has been into the 80's and HIGH humidity especially this past week or so. I will keep my fingers crossed.
