Help with my Bleeding Heart...sounds like a C&W song!

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

I tried Dicentra Bleeding Hearts for the first time this year. I got a late start first of all and we've had searing heat...so they are yellowing and not looking too happy. I also think they were getting too much sun. What should I do now? Should I cut them down to the ground and move them to a shadier spot now? I take it they should come back next spring...it's hard to tell with perennials in Florida...when and if they will return! Thanks for some information...

DaleP6,
I have had Bleeding Hearts for saeveral years and I live in Villa Rica, Ga. I have never had one turn yellow, until I bought a HUGE one about 2 weeks ago and haven't had time to plant it, and it was getting too much sun. I am going to water mine really good and plant it in full shade. If you can, That is what I would do too if I were you. It will turn back green and should be fine, just remember to water it really well.

Good Luck,

When it gets too hot & dry bleeding hearts will often go dormant. That's prolly what's happening to yours. I'm not sure you could stop it if it's already started to go dormant. I've had mine die right back to the ground but it comes back in full force the following spring.

I grow mine in mostly shade. They get morning sun. I have read that if you grow them in the sun, it shortens their lifespan.

I have two bl. hearts and they too get morning sun and the rest of the time in shade. They die back in fall and I cut them back in late winter and they come back great every year.
