got a big bag of grounds from Starbucks. Will they deter the snakes? Will anything deter the snakes. I just picked up a pot and found a small one. I know most of them are not poisinous, but I can;t stand the sight of one.

Don't we wish? LOL...I'm right in the middle of Copperhead and Cottonmouth territory..Been here 30 years, nothing that I know of will deter snakes..Don't waste your money on Snake-a-way, it's a joke and just 99% sulphur..Good luck, just keep your eyes open.. Most snakes can be very benificial to the gardener..Try to learn to live together..

At least in the bird house cedar/pine shavings seem to deter them. Guinea fowl and Peafowl(Peacocks/peahens)love to find and kill snakes. If a guinea fowl doesn't kill the snake it will drive it off with all the noise it makes right next to it. Many dogs and some cats will also kill snakes.
Snake Away is nothing but expensive mothballs! Check the 2 labels and see for yourself.
Larkie, if I lived where you do, I wouldn't be in the yard. I have a big fear of snakes. Sunday night I picked up a pot and a small snake crawled almost on my toes. I don't like any of them. I have used the snakeaway, but it doesn't help. I onlyl see one or two a year, but that is more than I want. I just walk around with a shovel in my hand.HA HA.
Chris
I am putting down cedar shavings for mulch. Maybe that will keep them away.
LOL..
I never leave home without it, (my shovel)..I also keep one in the kitchen, just in case.. We have had several Oak & Rat snakes inside...I hate to kill them, but inside they have to go..Outside, the shovel is part of my daily garb, lol..I keep one at each of the porches to outside..I just grab it by habit, and go..

Can you fence in your yard with that small-grid hardware cloth? Is your yard small enough that's feasible? I think a physical barrier is about all you can hope for.
