Organic Fertilizers

Louisville, KY(Zone 7a)

On another board someone recommended using chicken manure tea to feed a banana plant that I have. I've also read about people using compost tea as a fertilizer. Problem is, I don't know how to go about creating these concoctions. Anyone have any good recipes? I have a bag of compost, but I'm a little sketchy on where to get chicken manure.

Organic recipes for all sorts of things.

I'm really curioius why the F.A.Q., Garden Terms or Botanary links don't have organic fertilizer formulas.

CoCo...
Thanks for the links - I'm cutting and pasting like mad! Wow. I've only been subscribed to this site for a few days and so far everyone has been so helpful and enthusiastic. You folks are the best! Hope I can return the favor one day. :-)

Botanary doesn't have them because it is exclusively for botanical terms (family, genus or species names and their definitions.) Garden Terms has only a few....mainly because no one has entered them.

I did find the following:
Organic fertilizer: http://davesgarden.com/terms/go/2112.html
Rose fertilizer: http://davesgarden.com/terms/go/2278.html

Compost tea: http://davesgarden.com/terms/go/197.html
Manure tea: http://davesgarden.com/terms/go/565.html
Oak leaf tea: http://davesgarden.com/terms/go/1783.html
Weed tea: http://davesgarden.com/terms/go/1221.html

Darius, Garden Terms is a classic example of Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, Nobody. You know the story, right?

There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.

Anybody would have done it, but Nobody did it.

Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.

It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody, when Nobody did what Anybody could have."

You're most welcome and strongly encouraged (as is everyone else) to enter more fertilizer recipes if you'd like to ;o)

I have been making Compost tea since last year. I posted some information on how I made it and there are a many other ideas on my thread also. http://davesgarden.com/t/388148/

If you have any questions after reading this thread, please feel free to ask, and I will try to help you.

Terry, I read you loud and clear!

Donna, I've moved your thread to the FAQs to help preserve it. Of course, that's no guarantee it won't get lost in the shuffle - if you'd like to copy and paste it into Garden Terms, you're welcome to do so. One of the nice featurs of Garden Terms is that people can add as many different definitions or hints to each term as they'd like to, so even if someone else has posted their own recipe, you can post yours or add a suggestion or advice.

Darius, I'm grinning at ya - when I started looking through Garden Terms, that old story came to mind ;o)

Terry,

Thanks for preserving my original thread. Wow, that's the first time that I have finally given some information that DG wants to keep.

If you don't want to make compost tea yourself...how about compost "tea bags"? www.plantea.com. They're pretty easy to use. :) Jen

And we have PlanTea, Inc. in the Watchdog, in case anyone's had personal experience with them: http://gardenwatchdog.com/c/2319/
