Everyday seems to have another town hit by a tornado. The weather channel reported some town in Missouri that lost 3 people last night. I didn't catch the name of the town.
We've been lucky here. Seems all the storms are losing energy by the time they reach us. Our wost was Friday night.
Lots of lightning & rain but no damaging wind or hail.
Last night everything went to the north of us, we only got some sprinkles.
We arer about 100 miles east of Sioux Falls.
Bernie
Iowa state how are you ALL
Luckily, the storms weren't as bad in Nebraska last night as they were a week ago. Yesterday we cleaned stuff (tin, gutters, insulation, particle board) out of our fields that dropped out of the sky as a result of storms from a week ago that were 10-30 miles from us. The stories are unbelievable - farm equipment, school busses, train cars, buildings, etc. all tossed around like match sticks.
Merigold - my daughter will be moving into your "neck of the woods" this fall. She will teaching at Emerson-Hubbard which I believe is about 30 miles southwest of Sioux City.
Merigold,
I just saw your cloud picture. I think that's a "shelf cloud" caused by downdraft of cold air on the backside (usually SW side) of a bad storm; the cold air pours down out of the thunderhead's backside and spreads out, raising the warm, moist air below it and causing these layered clouds to form. Not tornadic, but may cause severe winds, and there may be a "wall cloud" at the front of the storm that looks similar and may be tornadic. Great and scary picture.
Don
Nebraska Jewel, Yup Emerson-Hubbard is almost exactly 30 miles away should be a nice area to live. Is your daughter new to teaching? Hope she likes the area.
Thanks for the info. on the cloud formation Don. My DH was saying it was a tornado but it did not look right to me, but none the less scary. Nature can sure put on a show...just hate some of the after math that it leaves behind. I really feel for the people who have experienced tornados, can't imagine it! I saw a funnel several years ago when I was heading East on I90...the funnel was very far away but quite visable on "the prairie". What an awsome and terrifying sight!
