There is flooding in Des Moines and other cities. They shut down the airport in Des Moines and moved everyone there to the basement for awhile. The shopping malls, people were moved to the lower levels. We've had tornado warnings all night, with rain and still raining. It is going to be quite the night until about 11:00 p.m. Just glad I got home from work before it let loose.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

There were 2 tornados earlier around 6pm about 40 miles NE of KC tonight. We're under tornado watches until 11pm here. But amazingly I can still use rain here in Olathe! I know, I know....be careful what you ask for. Brenda

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Sirens are going off......we're headed to the basement. Will be back later....God willing.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

praying for all of you in the midwest!!!!!! I hate this weather!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

So scary...be safe, our prayers are with you!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

How are you guys doing? Praying for your safety.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

All clear here!!! What a loud rumbly night we had. Pretty typical for us and I've been doing this every Spring for 39 years, so I'm probably a little more cavalier than I should be about it.

DH, 3 kids, 3 dogs, a cat and I headed to the basement for about 1 hr 15 min. tonight. Sirens were sounding and the rotations and classic T-Storm hook were all present. Luckily another storm collided with it about 10 miles west of us and sucked a lot of the energy out of it.

We're getting a good dousing of rain though and flash flooding is a bigger concern in the area (although not for us here at our place).

Good news is DH & DS FINALLY started putting together the Christmas present I got them....a bowflex weight training thingy-ma-job! LOL! They both HAD to have one of those darn things and now finally 5 months later they set it up. Guess it's one of those outta sight, outta mind things as it was in the basement waiting for someone to put it together for them!!!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Those tornado sirens are so eerie. I was in a tornado warning while at Lowe's Friday evening and it was scary hearing the rain and hail pelting the roof, plus the wail of those sirens.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

the flooding here is getting BAD! parts of I-75 are closed due to the flooding and highway rose up!

More rain is on its way today-oh bother!!!!!
we already have gotten over 7inches for the month of may!!

Some yards in flint have over 7ft of water in their yards-a dyke broke somewhere along the flint river!

Golly, Dori. Are you safe where you are? Is there any danger of water coming in your home if another dyke fails?

I believe it was 1993 or 1995 we had terrible floods here in the KC area. A section of the interstate was upheaved and it was closed for nearly a year while they rebuilt it. It ran along the flood plain of the Missouri river.

Please stay safe and let us know how things progress.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts about us here in Iowa. I believe I was very lucky this past week. Where I am I was pretty much in the middle of some very nasty weather. I am not too far from Hallum NE which was pretty much devistated by a tornado, then a few days later they were hit with more just a few counties south of me here in Iowa. I am thanking my lucky stars for only having severe thunderstorms and small hail.
Please remember all who were in the paths of these tornados and severe weather in your prayers.

We don't have sirens here. When we got our tornado weather, a week ago, you just had to be watching tv or listening to the radio to find out about it, when the emergency broadcasting system clicked on and told us. We rarely have tornados, so that is probably why no siren. Plus, the two that they say were seen on the West Plains may have been a big tornado to someone from around here, but peanuts compared to the ones many of you get. We didn't head for the basement - we went outside to watch the show! LOL! (Now if I were in the mid-west or south, I'd take those sirens and warnings much more seriously).

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Those sirens aren't all they're cracked up to be. Actually, I should say they serve a purpose but remember they're not perfect. Quite a few years ago, we lived just a few blocks away from the city hall, the location of the siren, and never heard it go off. The winds were so strong, only those downwind of the siren heard the alarm. If they get them going early enough, they can have much more impact, so just because they're not going, don't assume everything is ok. Watch those skies and that good Mr. 'doppler'. The newest ones are just incredible with what they can detect!!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Well folks, it was our turn tonight! Bad storms all over the place. Two went over us and we only got rain and wind. 10 miles south of us a number of tornadoes were on the ground. Another (3rd) storm came out of NE Nebraska and hit Sioux City with tornadoes. Haven't heard many damage reports yet. Hope Merigold(Sioux City) and Cottosnag (in Bronson) are ok. Bronson had a hook cloud forming into a tornado right over top of it about 45 min. ago. Hope it doesn't make it to the ground!!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Take care kooger!!! Do many people use root cellars? My Great Grandparents farm had an old ice house/root cellar dug into a small hill. They said they used it when the rare tornado came near their farm...G.Grandmother liked it better than the basement of their old house.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Not many root cellars used around here anymore. Mostly basements. Basements or cellars under houses weren't really great and usually had an outside stairway years ago so weren't used that often for storm cellars. I think most only had a cistern and a little space around it in days gone by.

I think I may be up for awhile. There's another band of storms heading this way around Mitchell, SD, about 1 1/2 hrs. west and it's headed east. Bummer, I'd rather be sleepng!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I'm looking forward to seeing your post in the morning kooger!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Hi Pam, the last bunch went north of us. We got lightning and rain. Whew! I hate it when we have bad weather on the weekends because the news is not on on the regular weekday times. Repeat for tonight they say. groan!! I'll have to get a radio on - more local news than tv.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Praying for you all up north of us. Looks like Spring is truly here as tornado season is the sure sign of it. Let's hope it settles down soon, but have a feeling this is going to be a busy season this year. Don't know why except I think the weather is a little unusually warm and earlier this year. Cold and warm air don't like colliding!!!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I'm glad the storm bypassed you kooger. I hope this season doesn't cause any major problems for the people in Tornado Alley.

southwestern, IA(Zone 5a)

Good to hear you are ok up there in Inwood kooger. Looks like we have more severe weather headed towards Iowa this afternoon. You are about 3 hours north of me but by the looks of radar the whole state may be in its path. Good Luck!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

back atcha!

Sioux City, IA(Zone 4b)

Here is a picture from last night. I brightened it a little because it was a bit dark. Hope it looks okay posted. This is our house with that horrible cloud behind it. Lucky the storm was short lived in our area. Not looking forward to tonight, we have our "safe" place under the stairs ready just in case. Hope everyone else is okay. Maridell

WOW! Nice pic. That just looks downright scary. Good to know it was short lived for you. I am not looking forward to tonight either. Best of luck to all with this weather.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

that is absolutely terror inducing!! First tornado warning just a little bit ago for today - Parker area, Meridell. Keep safe all!!

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

What an awesome picture, Meridell,I heard about the tornadoes there last night. Wondered if it was near my sister; she is in Dakota Dunes. I have not heard from her and my neice is on Old Lakeport Road.

Sioux City, IA(Zone 4b)

TLC, I'm sure that your sister and niece are just fine. I know that there was no actual tornados in Dakota Dunes or Old Lake Port (not to far from here!) and the thunderstorm last night was fairly brief... a little hail but not enough to do damge to plants or anything. So far things look good here tonight, its been windy all day but don't look stormy as of yet.

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

Merigold: Awesome photo. The past week our clouds have been so eerie creepy looking. Hope they end real quick. The next few days don't look too good.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, that cloud! Wow.

Sure is good to monitor this thread and see you guys checking in.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Seeing that cloud would make me want to find a hiding place below ground!!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

Im sure glad everyone is surviving the "spring storms"!
glad to see ya'll here posting!!

hoping your surrounding states are ok too!!
Just send in the SUN!!!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Sioux Falls has been pounded for the past few hours - more than one tornado and hail, high wind, etc. It's all just skimmed west of us but now one storm is coming over us. So far, just a severe thunderstorm warning. Hope that's it! The weather guys were saying this is the largest tornado warning area there has ever been in SD since they started doing the weather. Aberdeen and Watertown areas also were in tornado warnings this evening.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

3 tornadoes this evening just north of KC. Watching all the coverage on the news......I'm just south of KC (20 miles) and it skirted us to the west! Like I've said before, I've been here all 39 years of my life and have never seen a tornado, but I have a bad feeling this season. I've never seen so many in the KC area proper since I was a little girl of 2 or 3 (which I of course do not remember). Sit tight Iowa....heading your way from the SW. Please report in tomorrow morning (Sunday).

Brenda

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

All watches cleared out here - except flash flood warning for 7-8 counties. Inwood is high so we never have to worry about flash floods. We had 70 mph winds and heavy rain and lightning. That's ok! The only tornado watch area left around here is down south in S. IA and E. NE. That includes Jos in Council Bluffs and probably a few others! Glad you're ok down there in KC too, Brenda! Nitey nite!

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Friday night we got over 2" of rain and electrical storms.

Last night we only got a half inch of rain but it was wild.

Don't quire understand this but the rain was pelting the windows on the south side of the house and also pelting the windows on the North side.

All I can figure is that the wind kept shifting.

Makes one a bit uneasy.

Hope everyone makes it through this rough time in one peace.

PS The sun is out bright this morning; will be a beautiful day on the lake for all the week-end festivities.

Sioux City, IA(Zone 4b)

The storms last night were not too bad here. One came through around 11 p.m. and another around 1 a.m., lotsa rain but our winds did not gets as high as yours kooger. TLC thats creepy to have rain hitting two sides of your house makes you wonder what was going on out there! Lovely morning here also, hope we get SOME sun this afternoon.
