dwarf gardenias

Orange, TX(Zone 9a)

I have a question about pruning gardenia...should they be pruned after they have bloomed? My are loaded with blooms, but are a little thin in the leaf area and I have had trouble with yellow leaves, but put some iron and blood meal and they seem better...deb

Not an expert, but . . .

I prune when bloom is over, another two weeks from now for me. Don't neglect to root what you prune off! The more the merrier. The reason I say prune after bloom is that they apparently start setting their buds shortly after they finish blooming. I took some cuttings late last summer, and the cuttings bloomed this spring . . . still in their glasses of water. Go figure . . .

I top dress with coffee grounds and chopped oak leaves, for the yellow leaf problem. Or you can feed it azalea or rose food.

Mine isn't a dwarf, it's 5 ft tall and 8 ft wide, but it should be the same . . . Isn't it glorious in full bloom? =) I love gardenia.

Yes I love them and just read where to put one in your car for the smell,,,I will do that...what is the best way to root them ?

I just stick cuttings in water, they seem to do better when there are a lot of them crowded in a cup. I change the water periodically, but other than that, I ignore them. It takes a long time, months and months, but they almost always all root.

I'm going to try rooting hormone this time, and see if it speeds things up.

They do make a good car freshener, and I used to like to take a bunch to work for my desk.

I root my by just planting a bloom with the stem about 6 to 8 inches long.I stick it in a pot with potting soil water it well and cover with a glass jar, check in about a month take the glass jar off and tuck at the cutting if it resits a little when you tuck of it than it is rooted if it doesnt cover back up for a couple of more weeks.all That I root this way make.

HI, I nosed in here the other day and decided I needed to go get a cutting from my neighbors gardenia bush. It's in water now and doing fine.

My dh is allergic to flowers that smell so good to us. And wouldn't I really like to put a gardenia in the car? I missed that thread. Can you lead me there or tell me how that works? (I can try to keep my dh out of my car can't I?)

:^)
