What in the world. Such a clean bite. I have to catch this bug! Does anyone have any idea what type of bug would do this?
Nice bite out of sibirian iris bud
Something has been eating the buds and blossoms on my Xephyranthes. I had several buds coming out and after dark last night I went out to take a look. An earwig was on one bud and a chuck was taken out. That appears to be my culprit.
I just checked. Nothing on them but aphids, and as far as I know they don't bite, they suck.
no pun intended....lol
I'll keep watching, this really has me stumped.
Could it be slugs? They can take chunks out of hostas - do they eat iris?
Hmmmm, can slugs climb that high? We sure do have our share of slugs here!
Slugs can climb. The dang things will climb 5 feet up into my brug trees.
Sue -- my dutch iris look the same way!!! All I could figure was slugs too, but sure haven't seen any sign of them that far out in my yard....it's really dry out there. They must be nesting down under the mulch to stay cool/moist through the day.
Wow, well I have not caught one slug in the act, or anything else for that matter. I have pretty little siberians with perfect little cut outs on their leaves. Well if you catch your culprit please let me know!
I noticed a couple of SDB blooms with chunks biten out of them. Wonder if it might be a caterpillar....
I do have some kind of a bug that is on the honeysuckle next to my dutch iris that are pupating or something. At least DH thinks that's what they are doing.
I took some pics yesterday of them I'll see if the pics turned out (haven't even looked at them yet) and post them here if they are any good. Maybe someone will recognize what they are.
Looks like Japanese Beetle bites. They chew their way into my tropical Hibiscus buds. If I pluck them off before they've polished off the whole bud, the flower looks similar to yours. Do you have Japanese Beetles in your area?
Hi 1alh1, no I don't believe we have them here, and I've never seen one here either. I remember them well, though we had a bazillion in Maryland!
No, they don't have those nasties out west. Lucky dogs!
That amazes me, no JP in the West? Ithought they 'd be all over the country. Now I beginning to wonder why? Anybody know?

They're not a native species, for one. Here's a map of their spread from their introduction in 1908 through 1998: http://www.oardc.ohio-state.edu/biocontrol/jb_map.htm
Some states have such tough agricultural laws due to it being a big business, I think they protect themselves through that. The above page indicated there have been some in California, but they were eradicated before they spread.
I wish they would do this everywhere, I have a walking stick there is hardly anything left on it and the poor roses do suffer so much no matter how I try to protect them. Thank you GW something else I learned today.
