What brought you to DG?

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

I'm shy of joining anything on the 'net' but DD ChrystalSpin was on line and showing me the wonders of Dave's Garden and when I said it looked good - she bought me a membership.
Early Mothers day she says. And it's not just good it's great.

And the cost, are you kiddin'!! I just saw an add for a site where for three bucks a WEEK you can get to talk about doing a Atkins Diet. That's $156 a year! LOL Dave's is the best bargain on the web.

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

I use to go to GW and Garden Town but it was not as friendly. When both became out and out anti Christian some left and found Dave's Garden then told me about it and invited me over. Somewhere along the line someone paid my $15 and has done it ever since. I'm so grateful for that. I've recommended DG to many people. Both of my daughters have come on board but not paid their $15 yet. It really limits what they can view so I'm hoping they will find the money soon to be able to be full fledged subscribers/members. The dues are so low for what we get here on DG that I can't imagine not doing it if one possibly can. DG is not just a garden site to me, it is an extention of my family and myself.

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

I came here along time ago when it was free and came back off and off, mostly to look up plants or post some pics that I was proud of. I lost my password or name a few times along the way and made new ones.

After being banned for trying to trade a non-plant item for a plant in the plant trade at the other site (seen other people doing it and they're still there) and recieving a rude and sarcastic email from the site master, I came back over here and paid for a subscription.

I didn't think twice about contributing money to such a friendly, nice place.

Glad to be here!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

And a hearty "Welcome aboard, Capt!"

Be seein' you around the site!

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

I don't remember what brought me to Dave's Garden. But I think Horseshoe was sending me subliminal messages across the miles. ;~)

If Dave ever offers a life membership here, I reckon I'd pay it...somehow.

I was doing a plant search the other day and stumbled onto DG! Wow, what a find...I am having to live 600+ miles from home..(for the last 8 mo!) from hubby, pets and most of my plants (I brought a couple and keep adding). But my plants and a few online friends are what keeps me ...as sane as I ever am. This is a great place and I feel very fortunate to have found it...

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

hmmmm I really need to get out in the other forums more often. Like captmicha, I used it off and on, forgot user names, changed ISP's, crashed computers, etc. Last summer I told hubby I was just going to have to join "that garden site" I was always looking things up on. I started with the trial membership... it didn't take long to become hooked.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I, too, had been given the link a while before i joined. I'm not sure who it was (someone from GW) that i had been chatting with in emails..honeybee, busybee, hortihoney? gee i dont remember.
i did a search for my name and looked at my first posts back in 7/01 and there was a comment about the "stuffiness of gw).
its funny how we've come so far in our gardens. in 2001 brugs were a hard to find passion, with few people having a massive selection. Now i seem to have fallen behind, but thats okay, just means i have alot of catching up to do.
i was here when it was a free site, paid when it went to a paid site, dropped out for a bit, and now im back to stay.
home is home

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Had to read that twice...when I see GW, I think Gardenwife! :D

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

lol, no kimberly, i wasnt saying you were stuffy

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Plants Database brought me here.

Good people kept me here.

:)

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

The people here are great, the nicest I've ever met. But... I wish there were more traders. That's something that the "other site" had alot of.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

there are alot of "givers" here - I for one. I just don't have room for anything more, but have lots to give away.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I think the trading is spread across forums and trade lists and it can be daunting getting into the trade scheme here. I have not figured out the tradelists yet, but want to.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I think it's not just in the seed trading or plant trading forums. Sometimes they are in the forums of the plants being traded (like Brugs, or Perennials, or Annuals, or Tropicals, etc......) Sometimes even Dave's Garden (like Ursula's). The key is keeping your eyes open for them, and when you see one you want a part of you have to jump quick, or they run out.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

can't remember how I got here, but won't leave!! Great place. Go here first thing in the morning and in cold weather am here off and on all day!!

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

Instead of Hijacking a really fun thread that Mystic started, I posed Captmicha's thoughts re trading in a question on this thread.

This thread goes right along with the thread Mystic started, "How did you pick your DG name?"

I got really into houseplants last year but never could figure out what they were. PDB got me hooked. I got the boyfriend to put the subscription on his credit card. What a nice guy, now he can never get online.;)Mere

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Melissa, heck hijacking threads is ok with me. You learn some cool stuff sometimes.

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

I was researching plant databases to present to my Garden Club. I found DG and enjoyed the fact that it was so user friendly. Then I found that you had to join to get to the forums, which, as a gardener, I was attracted because all of you know how much you love to talk to another gardener!! So do I! I have enjoyed the comments, the information and the pictures ever since.

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

I don't really remember, I went to Garden Web first, and then I became aware of DavesGarden, so I have been double dipping ...I am on the Rose and Antique Rose Forum on there, and sometimes the Texas Gardening Forum..I have (so far) only gotten a couple of 'friendly reminders' from Spike, (knock on wood) I feel as if I have made friends in both places. I had a party in October with people who I had met online, mostly at the GW...it went really well, I had 79 people, that includes some women who are in my garden club...I might try to have another one in October again, and I hope some people from Daves will be able to be there...

Lamar, AR(Zone 7a)

Who is spike? Friendly reminders to do what? Stay loyal to his website only?

He (and that board forum) sounds like communistic community. That's ridiculous the amount of banning he doles out.

anyways, to stay on topic. I was doing a google search for several plants. The PDB database kept popping up. I dug around in the database and found myself in heaven. The amount of information here is mind boggling! Then I stumbled into one of the forums. I paid my subscription very quickly. It was important to have the ability to post questions and pictures. The feedback is awesome!

Oh, forgot to say, that long ago i was banned for posting off topic. After repeated emails to him, he reinstated me. Or maybe enough time passed and he forgot about me, lol (dunno)
I guess I'm still a member in good standing, lol, although i havent posted in ages.
I remember when i first started coming here, there were quite a few still active on both sites. I received a few emails about "watch what you say, because "so and so" is a
spike-spy and will report you for saying anything about him" type thing. I forgot what they were called....but something to the effect of spies.
My first thought was ut-oh better watch myself, and then of course the 2nd was.....get real.
I'm here because i want to be, and because dave lets me.
Of course, the best form of advertisement is word of mouth, and people LOVE drama.

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

Spike has spies on Daves Garden??? That's a bit... strange to say the least. And I will say the least.

Fort Collins, CO(Zone 5a)

My story is much like Terry's. I moved from one state to another and was looking for gardening info. I found GardenWeb first but could never quite break into the clique mentality there. Plus I had emailed them asking them for a list of their rules because I couldn't find any posted. The replies were pretty snotty, so I canceled my membership. That pretty much made me gun shy about joining another site. Then I found Dave's by searching for certain plants, lurked around and discovered what a friendly site it is. So I decided to join recently.

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

Have a look at my page, and you will find September 13, 2004 will be my third anniversary in Dave's Garden.
At the beginning,I,being a plant addict, hanged about between sevearl garden webs.I happened to meet Diana from Michigan, and it was her that led me into this garden. And she even paid buck$ onwards for me.Without her generosity, there would be no Jianhua herein.
I am here harvesting plentifully.I not only learn a lot of botanical knowledge, but also make a lot of friends, kind ones.
and moreover my wordbank is expanding terrificly day by day.
This is necessary and important for a teacher teaching English as a foreign language.
I will grow with DG.

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

Hmmmmmmm did I post here yet?
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.......
Ginger_H brought me to DG! She was always talking about it and stuff... then she got me a subscription! :D

Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

I stumbled across Dave's Garden about a month ago while doing a google search...I had a strange plant that I thought might be "Jack in the Pulpit" crop up in my yard...I enjoyed what I saw in the PDB so much that I checked out the rest of the site and signed right up!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Howdy mykeyh. A bigtime WELCOME TO DG!

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

Google brought me to DG and I've been telling all my gardening friends and relatives ever since. RLHETZELJR is one of my "recruits"! I'm so glad I found DG....just wish I could spend more time here - but gotta eat so gotta work - which is what I SHOULD be doing now....lol ;-)

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

I got booted off of GW after posting several posts about free Spring Garden Tours. I wrote Spike several times asking for his help to get back on the GW and never received a response - had a friend email him to see if he had received my emails - he had, but wanted me to beg......this same thing has happened to at least 5 people I know - don't get the Spikemater upset at you!

I love the casual friendly feel of Dave's Garden.

TUCSON, AZ(Zone 9a)

My husband found this site when he was helping me find some info on a plant. Looked around and LOVED!! what I found. Join and been here since. I get my coffee (in my DG cup) sit down in front of my computer, and read DG. Everyone is so nice and helpful here. Don't even try any place els. If the info isn't here, then its not anywhere! I LOVE DG ! What can I say? Binky

this site is a blessing, not only from THE OTHER SITE that we all know of, but another msn site that sent me nasty e mails...
I have found daves garden as my new trade home...

those who know me , know I just love starting round robins so watch the posts...

I also love to trade and donate seeds to new traders...

(Zone 7a)

A serendipital chain reaction. I and 1,000 others got laid off. A neighbor left some chamber music on my porch. I started practising again after 38 years and how intensely beautiful music can be when you play it yourself and against other instruments. Tendinitis stopped that in 2003, so I took a class in grasses and perenials and the next muse struck: my teacher, M.R., who gently glows with a love of plants and gardening. He alerted his class to Dave's Garden and when we (finally) acquired a computer, I made a beeline (beelines are not normally my forte) to DG (became a paying subscriber a few days ago). I love the warmth of exchange, freedom of expression, considerateness, silliness, erudite-ness, etc on this site. Wherever you are M, Thank you.

What a neat story, bluespiral. Sorry to hear about your tendonitis - I have that, too. Watch the troweling in your garden! ;) DG is a wonderful site. I wonder if your teacher subscribes.

Zone 6, OH(Zone 6a)

Spike kicked me off GardenWeb :) Good thing though...now I know how he is (and so do plenty of others from what I hear!)

Temuco, Chile(Zone 9b)

Long ago I did trade with Dave, I wasn't a member of GW but I did answer one of his post there. Some weeks later he send me a mail, telling me he did have a site and ever so nice, he invited me to join. I was so happy. I wanted to continue using english on a daily bases (and living in Chile this is imposible), I could enjoy the company of friendly gardeners and to top it all, I could trade some seeds for others that I will never find over here. At that time it was a free site.

When subscription arrived to the site, I knew I wouldn't be able to afford it. The exchange is too expensive for me. Today US$1 is $650 ( Chilean pesos).

Dave did send me a note, I was going to be sponsored by the wonderful Guardian Angel gang and that's the end of the story. I enjoy DG, I bless DG and I send my very best thoughts everyday, not only to Dave and Trish but to all the members that made this garden a great part of my life.

VIVA Dave's Garden!

(Zone 7a)

hczone6, it looks like getting kicked off GardenWeb is a badge of honor. I was thinking, earlier this evening while enjoying the night-flowering gourd blossoms floating above our yew hedge, what great company I have found myself in. I wish we could keep this thread going - there must be quite a few stories out there about the road to DG.

gardenwife, my DH and i wheelbarrowed 4 cu yards of mulch up a 150' section of our hill for the garden earlier this spring. I still do physical therapy, use an antiinflammatory, ice and try to pace myself, but stay out of the garden per pt's advice? not while I can still crawl. lol

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Blue, my hubby does most of his gardening at ground level due to a broken back and subsequent surgery in 1996. We can relate! :)

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

I look up Google at least once a day, I can't remember what I wanted to know about a plant or even what kind of plant it was, when I saw DG. The welcome sign seemed so very friendly and had more fun scanning it over. I joined at once and paid the dues for a year. I have never regretted it. Have been only a member since last June now wishing I had seen it before, everyone has been so wonderful that I feel many have become my friends as if they lived next door and actually wishing they would.
I also appreciate that it is not only for gardening but about problems one has to tell about and laugh at the funny side of life.
I did not know how addicted I am to DG till recently when we lost the elcrticity to an accident that happened down the street for 3 hours, just the time when I was on GD, golly was I furious!
