I wove mini blinds through 20 gauge chicken wire for my new vegie garden. How do you like my picket fence?
Good use for old mini blinds
Neat solution and very fool the eye. the white lines of the pickets may help visuallly deter too. It's so painful to loose plants after all our hard work. Good Luck.
Alright...I'll bite. What is a javalina? In the East, the only way to keep the deer & raccoons out is a netting over the entire garden. It is a pain to get into the garden, but we get to keep our veggies now!
http://www.desertusa.com/magnov97/nov_pap/du_collpecc.html -- I'd never heard of them, either!
You know how expensive those plant markers are we use for identifying our plants are? Cut those babies up you have an incredible, recycled "identifier"
Jan, I really like that "picket fence". You are so creative :)
I saw a pair of javalina when we vacationed in Bisbee AZ. We rented a cabin set on the side of a mtn, with the deck leading out onto the slope. These guys came snuffling around early in the morning and ate the watermelon rinds we left out. Kind of cute, if you're inside and they're outside!

Jan, I love your fence. I could do that on an ugly chain link gate couldn't I?
GW, Thanks for the website. My DD went to a convention at a large resort in Tuscon, Arizona and they had signs posted at the sliding glass doors going out on the patios to be sure the doors were closed. Apparently they will come inside. Now I know what they look like...UGLY!!!
A face only a mamma javelina could love!
jan - don't know about the deer in your area but in upstate new york the deer would laugh at it. i have to put up a fence seven feet high and run a wire back and forth from one end to the other in order to deter the critters. your fence looks great by the way. have a good season.
Yea, Herbie, I know. You cant see it but I have fishing line strung all around the four corner poles. The deer we have here are mule deer and they aren't very large. They can jump but I think the fishing line helps to detor them from investigating. It work on my peach tree. Now the javelina are another story. They are very distructive and there were six of them out there just this morning. They were busy munch up all the fallen mulberries so I don't think they went to check out the garden to throughly. I did see one spot where they may have tried to push on the fence. Guess I will have to put up one of those motion detector water sprinkler at night and just hope the cats don't set it off. Heheh.
Put some cardboard cutouts of Bob Evans and Jimmy Dean around that garden....Mmmmmm sausage! Maybe that'll deter those piggies.
ROFL!!!!! Kim...you're tooooo much!
You know, I love animals. But these things... are kept as pets in some areas? Can you really SMELL them before you SEE them? I don't know...I just can't get CUTE out of these critters... at all! They also sound like they have voracious appetites. So keep your garden for yourself! Is there any odor that will deter these beasts, like garlic?
hee hee hee!
There is nothing cute about these critters. Garlic? They would think you are giving them a treat. They were back out there this morning again. Still Munching on the fallen berries but those are going to run out soon. I think I am going to have to reinforce my fence at the bottom. If there is a mother with babies it can be a very dangerous situtation. they are very protective. They have razor sharp teeth and have been know to attack people or animals to defend their young. Their eye sight is their only disadvantage. They have tunnel vision so you can sneek up on them. but they do hear fairly well. They do have a season here that you can hunt them but that is not my bag so I will leave that alone.
Wow - I thought we had problems with groundhogs! They are child's play compared to your beasts. We trap & relocate the groundhogs every couple of years. They will turn around & attack when you release them, so it is always an adventure!
I love the fence idea. I can get those old mini blinds for next to nothing at thrift shops, yard sales, even free sometimes from some people's trash cans. If one could find different colors a multicolor fence would be possible. What a sight that would be.
I my opinion the only good Javalina would be a dead one or one far from where people live.
Is there a nickname for this critter? I can't believe I have never heard of them. I went to school in AZ for a year, & never saw one then, either. (kinda glad I didn't, too!) Or do you just refer to them as PITA's? I love the miniblind idea. I will be looking for them at tag sales now, too.
The only nick name I know of is PIGS! Which they resemble. The are actually a member of the rodent family but are as big as boars. They resemble boars too.
Big ratty pigs. EEEEWWWWW!
The only thing to consider when doing this is that most mini-blinds will deteriorate over time when exposed to the elements. You might find yourself having to replace some or all of them in the next few years.
Imagine how pretty if you used different colors... like pastels!
Hmmm. Was just wondering...can you engrave on the miniblinds? Wether plastic or metal? I think I would like to find the old aluminum ones and engrave on those, I would think those would last a really long time. Kinda likethe ones Dablaw made but I wouldnt need to make a stake for them. Watcha think?
