This Crazy Gardener!

Princeton, IL(Zone 5a)

I was outside spreading dirt until after 10 p.m. for a new garden. It was there when I got home from work and I had to leave for an appointment. I got home at 9 p.m. Luckily, I have a street lamp between my lot and the neighbor's and I was actually able to somewhat see what I was doing. It is supposed to rain today, so I HAD to get it finished.

Next step, put down the weed block and some stepping stones, then order a big load of mulch!

Then the fun starts...planting. I have some daylilies temporarily trenched in the back yard. They were not supposed to arrive until after May 1, but the nursery shipped on 4-15-04. Then I have a bunch of stuff to move around and more stuff coming from different co-ops! Gardening paradise!

But for now, the dirt is spread and I am firmly entrenched in the neighbors' minds as that crazy gardener!

Many nights find me out after the suns gone - long gone and that's not why the neighbors call me that crazy lady who gardens.

Pulling weeds in the wind this morning. Yeah! that makes sense. But they're out there and going to seed as I write. Gotta get me a boy with a stick - to hit me when I sit down here at the computor.

Pic is volunteer baby's breath and soapwort over by cellar door. Something besides weeds to greet me. Blooms here.

Sometimes, when it get's really hot here in the summer, night time is the only time I can garden without getting too hot.

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

No nighttime gardening for me, the mosquitoes would carry me away!

Every neighborhood needs at least one crazy gardener and one crazy cat lady. That's how you know it's a neighborhood! LOL

Well, thanks, for making me feel not so crazy...at least among this bunch! ;~D

Sundry, you're right...that is what makes a neighborhood. Thank goodness for us crazies, or it would just be a bunch of faceless, homogenized people living unknown next to each other.

I've thought about gardening at night but by the time it gets dark I am just too tired to go back out there. I do work outside until it gets too dark to tell weeds from anything else, then just call it quits.

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

I think 9:30-10pm is the latest I've been outside working. lol That and me digging a garden bed in January have probably got me chaulked up as the crazy garden lady. :)

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

I'm the crazy garden lady who is in a swimsuit top in April, on my knees in mud after 3 days of rain, trying to turn the soil and expand a bed. Mud smudges on my face, arms, legs, in my hair.

In fact I KNOW I'm really considered the neighborhood crazy as my next door neighbor hollered over the fence at me a few days ago and said, "Brenda....you're the talk of the neighborhood!" I say, "WHAT!? Why's that?" Her reply?

"Everyone just can't believe how much your putting into your yard and nobody is helping you."

Ha! Got 'em all fooled. Gardening is my secret alone time. The only way to escape the kids and DH and dogs and.... Well, basically I say, "I'm gonna go out and gonna do some yardwork." And they all skadaddle.

I got home late last night. We had a foal born at the farm, beautiful filly. When I arrived at about 9:30, there was a load of mulch for my garden blocking my driveway. I parked in the street. If it wasn't for the fact that I got up at 5 a.m. yesterday and worked at the farm most of the day and stayed to help with the foaling, I would have tackled it. As it is, this will be my last post and I am off to work at the farm for the day. Will be back to mulch tonight. In addition, Spring Cleaning p/u is Monday morning for me. Everything has to be at the curb tonight as my street is first and all gets picked up at 5 a.m.

I'll be busy! ;~D

Lisa - by the time you read this I hope you've gotten some well-deserved rest after your busy Sunday!! Bless your heart. Spring is something we gardeners look forward to with such zeal, but seems it also runs us ragged, doesn't it? I wish you luck with your mulch pile....I'm still working on mine 2 weeks after it was delivered! Let's see some pics of that new foal.

Well, I got home at 5:30 and put the junk on the curb. I then started mulching as the rain started. Luckily, it only drizzeled and most of the work was under the maple, so I am only damp and should drip dry soon! I only got my new garden and one older garden in the front yard mulched and a little over half of the mulch is gone. The back is too dark and so I will tackle that in the morning as I have the morning off. If I get that done quickly, and turn the compost pile, I will have time to do a little planting in my new garden!

It is only 8:30, but I am ready for bed! Night all!

While kind of on this subject,do you work harder in the spring?
Or in the fall?

Princeton, IL(Zone 5a)

Good morning, Tropicman! I probably work about the same in both seasons in my garden. But for me, Spring is my busiest time. My job is seasonal, it starts getting busy in March and peaks in July; by the end of August it's slow. My two hobbies, gardening and horse showing are seasonal (Spring through Fall). Now is foaling season at the farm (six babies on the ground, three to go) and that means lots of late nights and even all nighters.

I picked up quilting to make have a winter hobby, but I still do enough planning (and buying) in the winter towards having a new garden with lots of plants to put in the ground. Of course, last year I did new gardens in both spring and late summer/early fall. Will probably do one in the fall again this year. Just in the mental planning stages right now. I have to finish this one physically before I let my brain take over and have another one ready to go!

LimeyLisa...and do you wear a red cape and leap tall buildings at a single bound? Just teasing! In my whole life (long) I NEVER had that much energy. I bow in awe!!!!!!!!!!!
Pati

Princeton, IL(Zone 5a)

LOL Pati! Maybe I should get a red cape and then I could get even more done!

Today, I got the mulching finished, the compost turned and then had to go to work. I did come home and plant after work. I moved some hosta and monarda, planted 13 daylilies and a couple of mums. Still trying to decide what else is going in the new garden. I have five more daylily plants from Melissa's co-op (not here yet), 5 lilium bulbs from Brenda's co-op, and 19 irises on order to arrive later this summer. Will be going on a plant hunt at some nursery's later this month and see what I can find on sale.

I'm still lacking a digital, but have been taking pictures. I will post when I get them developed.

Pati,I agree with you ,what can does she get all that energy out of,I'd buy a case or two!!!
Spring is the busiest time for me too, just by fall I'm wore out and have lots to get done, and not enough time or energy to do it all in!!
Limey lisa, one of the young guys I work with is getting married here shortly and moving to a little town out of Champangne Illinois, his soon to be bride is graduating from Kstate and will be a veternarian there this June,is that any where close to you?

Princeton, IL(Zone 5a)

No, I am actually right on I80 about 50 miles from Iowa. Champagne is about a 2.5 hour drive from here, South and East. It is as near Indiana as I am Iowa. Champagne is a great place to live being a college town and all. Occassionally, we have to take one of the horses down to the University to be seen by specialists. Not a reason for which I like to go, but there is a fabulous Italian restaurant that we can go to when down there. Can't remember the name, only know how to get there from the large animal unit.
