mulch from tree removal

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

i have a question. we are taking down 2 large maple trees. if i keep the fresh ground tree wood, will this be ok to use as mulch in my garden beds? i don't want to attract any more carpenter ants or termites to around the outside of my home. i use mulch, but it is purchased and already seasoned.

also, what would i have to do to season it myself?

help, there coming down soon.

thanks debi z

Use it.

You can use it as mulch on TOP of the ground but don't mix it IN the ground. If you want it to age, just let it sit in a pile till it dries, possible by the end of summer/early Fall you can begin to use it (or save it for next Spring, when you'll really benefit from it as mulch).

We had a big oak tree taken out in the front yard and I just went ahead and put all the mulch on top of my gardens. Everything did just great, I did notice some kinda mold growing, but it seemed to me that the mold was actualy breaking the unseasoned mulch down faster. That was fine with me and I also turned it when I would dig thru it. The plants are all doing great and growing just as good if not better than ever.

yep...a big ol pile is fine. It may start heating up and breaking down but if they are good-sized chips it'll take a while. (Will eventually make a great soil amendment!)

just what i wanted to hear everyone. simple, easy and the cost of tree removal doesn't hurt as much if i can use it as mulch. thank you folks. once again i've come to dave's gardeners for an answer, i knew would be answered. :)

I had the fellows that cut down and chippped my 35 poplar trees, 2 years ago, put the chips in a large pile. Have used almost oll of it by now. No problems except some of the poplar twigs have been trying to grow. Donna
