Verbena

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

My neighbor gave me several 4" pots of verbena which I have never grown. It looks as if it might spread like a groundcover...does it? Also a pot of Calibracha which I am going to look up right now...anyone grown it? Pretty pink flowers and interesting foliage.

mine verbena spreads like crazy and blooms all the time.

calibrachoa is like a little mini-petunia. Both of these are spreaders/trailers

Verbena doesn't need much water. Calibrachoa, like petunias, do.

the verbena you can use in a container to hang. i lost my verbena's this winter in our cold spell. :(

So...planted in the ground they will spread and in a hanging basket, they will hang...what a nice versitle plant! Think they could live and bloom in very bright shade here in hot days/hot nights Florida?

Dale--my Verbena last year took off in the heat of summer....Aug/Sept when we were 100°+ and humidity in the 90% range! It seemed to love it. It did get shade in the mid-late afternoon though.

We Floridians have a bit of a problem translating the zones I think because we are not only hot in the day time like many other states, but we are also hot at night and the poor little buggers don't get a chance to rest. I am going to plant them in bright shade and see how it goes...

Do Verbena Blue Violet grow from tubers? In thrashing through one of last years beds, I found a clump of tubers that are just beginning to show foliage. A short distance away I found an PW label that says "Blue Violet Verbena". Could it be them? The foliage has a bit of a lacey look, what little that is there. Can't for the life of me remember putting them there, but what else is new. In reading some of the posts it sounds as though I can just dig them right back in and expect them to succeed? May even get daring and try dividing the tubers to spread them around? Hope to hear from someone before I do anything dumb.

Lindsey--I wouldn't say my 'Blue Princess' verbena has tubers. They are more like runners that run along the surface of the soil and send out roots from the runners/stems. Here's a pic of mine today

Dale, I planted verbena in a bright sunny location....took about 4 weeks for it to settle in, but then the blooms came fast and furious! they seem to thrive in the full sun. i watered them every day (from a water can) for the first week, and then let the twice-thrice weekly sprinklers take over, which has reclaimed water, so they are getting lots of compost in there.....they've received praise from the entire neighborhood, so they definitely can survive here.

Nannette...lovely! Where did you get your plants? Are their any independent nice nurseries in Mannate? Farm and Garden downtown and then the big chains is about all in Sarasota.

Maybe next year I will plant verbena in my half barrels where I have always had petunias. Too late this year, I wish I had seen this thread about 3 days ago.

nanette, i think we have the same red. i'm going to put it into some planters. i fell in love with it. does yours have that hint of pink to it that makes the red just pop?
