Uber Gardeners??!!

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

How cool is that? When did those appear? Above all...Thanks!

Fountain, FL(Zone 8a)

wasn't there this morning...noticed it right off this afternoon.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

:o)

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

What's the point? :)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

It *is* a hyperlink....

MD &, VA(Zone 7b)

cool!

Now when are you going to list hosta as a seperate database again so I can work on it? ;)

Northern California, CA

Oh my ..... thanks you guys, that is so nice. Perhaps it will light a fire under other members to add their knowledge. I've learned more from other gardeners entries than I've entered in the PDB.

Crossville, TN

WELL! I was distressed to find that I didn't have one under my name...but then when I saw what it represented I knew I'd never get there....LOL I do appreciate the ones that have contributedd their time and talents to the PDB though..An Appreciator, Jo

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Well done all you Uber Gardners! I've appreciated your work for some time now, and it was neat to read a little bit about the depth of your contributions!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

So Terry... how come YOU aren't a UBER gardener? You've done more work in the database than all of us put together. In fact, I think you should be Queen UBER!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

I salute all of you and noticed this today myself!

But, what does UBER mean? Thanks!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

über is a German word, which as far as I know means "above" or "over". It's come to mean (in American slang) "super" so by either defnition, it seemed appropriate.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Very cool! Congratulations and thank you to all the UBERs.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Wow that's cool. Thank you I just noticed it's on my homepage too.I have learned allot by working in the database so I am being selfish and helping myself. I agree Terry you should be on that list too.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

I luv seeing that!

A great pat on the back to you bigtime contributors to the PDB!

Enjoy being an "Uber"...a badge of honor!

Thanks Ubers for all your time and efforts!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Like all of us, I appreciate all the good work these wonderful gardeners have provided for us! I personally have gained so much from all their contributions.

I do wonder, though, why the choice of a German word? I know that not all the "Uber Gardeners" are Americans, but everything else on this site is in English.

It was in part based on my recommendation, so let's see if I can explain my thought process (it's currently fever-afflicted due to a late-season cold or bout with allergies, so we can either blame or credit my infirmed state of mind for the choice ;o)

I started out thinking about the term "master gardener" but of course, that term has a very specific and exclusive application in the U.S. So I quickly ruled it out.

"Super gardener" led to "uber gardener" as "uber" has become a universally-used word at least with the younger crowd (I probably I picked it up from my kids): http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=uber&btnG=Search

At any rate, it seemed an appropriate descriptor for these fine folks ;o)

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Aha... :) I was happy to find myself from the¨"über-list" :D

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

A standing ovation to all of the Uber gardeners!!
Terry,I hope you get feeling better.spring colds seem to be the worst.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Terry, Thanks for the explanation. I have no objection to the word, was just curious. Obviously I have no contact with any of the younger crowd!

I think it's wonderful to recognize the contributions of so many fine folks.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil(Zone 11)

Oh, I didn´t expect that ^.^

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Congratulations to all you UBERs, glad to see you get some needed recognition. Donna

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

BRAVA and BRAVO to all the Ubers!!!! And to Terry for recognizing them!

Terry should have a Super Duper Uber Gardener under her name. Take a look at this:

Terry's contributions

The Plants Database:
48,130 Plants
552 Comments
106 Images
278,421 Options

The Garden Watchdog:
197 comments and ratings

The Garden Bookworm:
14 comments and ratings

Garden Terms:
750 definitions

Botanary:
11,601 items

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

But wait a minute....

The plant entries are skewed because so many of them were actually uploaded in one fell swoop by Dave, ditto on the options. I also have the ability (ssshhhh, don't tell anybody) to CLONE an entry, which makes it incredibly easy to pop out a dozen entries for cultivars, etc., replete with details all checked off, with just a few tweaks to customize each one.

When we launched Botanary, we began with either 3,000 or 6,000 words, definitions and pronunciations. These were worked on by SEVERAL members here - I only compiled it and Dave uploaded it.

I really can't feel comfortable patting myself on the back (I'm not double-jointed), especially when I'm in the midst of people who have earned the title and honor the old-fashioned way ;o)

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Sometimes I wish I had the magic of admin tools!! LOL! You still got all those entries in and spent all the time getting them ready...You deserve a huge pat on the back for that and all else you do!

I agree - Terry definitely deserves a spot on the Uber gardeners list. Even with the custom tools that I've written to ease her job, she still has spent tremendous (and I mean TREMENDOUS) amounts of time and energy on the PDB.

I think that because Terry was the one compiling the list, and is sort-of a "full-timer" at DG, she didn't feel right including herself... Ahh well.

dave

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

yup. (But I did like the way "super duper uber gardener" rolled off my tongue *giggle*)

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Great job and thanks to all you ubers!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I've been so busy with taxes, seedlings, and an unexpected Flat Stanley, that I didn't happen upon my Uber until today. I was so surprised when I clicked on it! How wonderful to be included with all those illustrious and industrious others! I really appreciate it.

I agree that Terry should have an Uber, as well, but a 'Grand' Uber... perhaps a 'Guber'?

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

lololol weez!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I've been called a guber many times, but it's usually spelled G-O-O-B-E-R ;o)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

BTW, it dawned on me that no one has really credited Dave for the idea of recognizing the top PDB contributors. He had come to realize that some people outside of DG thought the PDB was the creation of just a few people, and when they learned how many gardeners actually contribute to it, they were blown away. I was glad to be able to help him with the process because the people we've already recognized (and the others who will be recognized in the future) are what make the PDB what it is and what it will continue to become.

And yes, I've spent a lot of time on the PDB, but one person can't create something like this without a lot of help. It takes a community of gardeners to create something as special as the PDB, and my hat is off to all 5,284 people who share what they know in order that we can all learn a little bit more.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

You are so right, Terry, but I still want to see that 'Goober' under your name!

Montezuma, NM(Zone 5b)

Uh, I was reading this like those "vanity" license plates. You know:
.....u... b... er ... gardeners
tehehe

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

It is a wonderful recognition to all those UBERs and all of them fully deserve the tag, which itself is so artistic.

King Ubers, Queen Ubers, Kid Ubers..... Let's be simple without too much discrimination. If that is done, someone might suggest rankings/seedings (like in sport). That could be quite complicated!!??

Princeton, IL(Zone 5a)

Way to go, Ubers!

LimeyLisa Kay

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

DG has Ubers
Knowledgeable to the max
Plant information

A little haiku and kudos to you guys and gals who provide the rest of us here with your expertise!

TC...

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

TC,

Do you get a special recognition for being DG's resident poet/writer? The Uber writer?

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

I just got it smilin32!

Seriously, you Ubers are a very special bunch and I know I'm not the only one who is so appreciative of the work y'all put into the Plants Database.

Of course many thanks to Dave, Terry, and all the other admin folks too. They work hard at keepin everything here on my favorite gardenin site runnin as smooth as water off a duck's back!
