I don't know the varieties I have in my raised bed but I too have been harvesting fresh asparagus (is the plural asparagi, LOL) and it is so yummy.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I know it's so yummy, that's why I want more, LOL

I REALLY want an asparagus bed if I ever get a home of my own again!

Kathy, I'm told size doesn't affect tenderness.

Kathy, I'm told size doesn't affect tenderness, contrary to popular belief.

I'm gonna get my dh, to make a couple more raised beds, I'm buying more of them, I dont; care if I hae to wait a year or so to pick them, I want the purple passion ones too, your suppose to be able to eat the whole stem, you don't have to break off the tough part on them.

kathy_ann - they look great. always wanted to plant them but was always put off by the thought of having to wait a year before harvesting them. are they difficult to grow?

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

piece of cake, I did wait a year too for them to grow, didn't pick at all the first year, now we're harvesting, going to plant somemore, and have to wait another year for them, but they are real easy to grow, mine are in a raised bed, to keep out weeds, newspaper on bottom so the roots can go through, so far no weeds

I have never seen asparagus grown and am curious. After one plants the crown, does that crown grow into one stalk of asparagus?

And when you harvest the asparagus stalk, does a new stalk grow from the piece left in the ground?

And it takes two years to get an asparagus stalk? (No wonder they are so expensive!)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

louisiana, it takes 2 years for a crop, but after that you can harvest every spring. i haven't grown any yet, but i've been thinking of doing it.
kathyann,
do the crowns multply each year, so you get more than one stalk per crown?
i do remember that bed preparation was important.
any advise would be appreciated.
thanks debi z

I put mine in a raised bed, layering, with pete, soil, leaves, etc. newspaper down first, and I have one crown planted in each spot, that particular crown is sending up 5 or 6 sometimes 8 stalks of asparagus,

i'm not an expert on asparagus, I just used the raised garden method and planted them, they shot up the first year, and I let them turn to fern, then the next year, (now) I'm picking them

If you plant a large bed you can harvest from a portion in the spring and let the rest grow. Then when the stalks in the first group begin to get thin quit harvesting there and cut another section down. Thick stalks will come up and you harvest those for a time. That way you can have a longer season.

I have done this in the past. I laid stepping stones across the bed and planted seed. I had lots of aspargus for a number of years until I got too busy at work to take care of it.

I planted several starts of asparagus a few years ago. Not all grew i probably didn't take good enough care. But i do have 2 clumps of Purple Passion and had enough for a nice meal last week.In a day or two there will be enough in the largest clump of green to eat, if we don't get a hard frost. It is pretty cold at night here yet. Actually we had a nice rain for about an hour the first rain since March 1, oh there have been a couple of showers but you could almost count the drops!!!! Donna

Hi All, I plan on putting aspargus in this year, I've been told it takes 7 yrs. to grow? I also hear alot of planting of this in a raised bed, what exactly is that? My husband has tilled out a section in our yard for this new vegetable garden and we're planning on building a base such as stone and then filling it with dirt, will this be adequate, is there any special thing we should do or get for the aspargus? Can't wait, LOL! Denise

I grew mine from seed and if I remember correctly I harvested some the second year and lots after that. I don't know why crowns would not produce as soon.

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Denise, what you describe is a raised bed. Most commonly it is framed with boards but rocks would work as long as the soil doesn't sift out through the spaces between the rocks. Asparagus can be harvested the 2nd year, but don't pick all of it, leave some stalks to feed the plant. Dig a trench in your raised bed, set the crowns on mounds of soil so the roots drape down over the sides, fill with soil just up to the crown (the growing part where all the roots come together) then fill in more soil as the plant starts to grow. Set the crowns even with what will be the soil level, don't bury them under 6 inches of soil like I did the first time I planted asparagus and wondered why nothing ever came up. The directions on the package were not clear. I grow Jersey Knight, supposed to be all male stalks, larger in diameter and not making seeds if left to grow. My rule is if a plant has 2 stalks pick one and leave the other to grow. This fall or next spring I need to make a new bed, mine has become crowded from grapes on one side and boysenberries on the other. Things looked really small when I planted them......

Thankyou! MaryE thanks for the extra advice I certainly am keeping this page and I had to chuckle when you said first planted everything appeared very small, lol! Denise

I planted 10 crowns last fall and I don't see anything as of yet...I wonder if they made it through the winter? Can anyone help me with this? Is it still to early to worry about this? I'm in Northwest Missouri. Thanks, Deb
