Living down here in S. Florida, I never really thought much about critters hibernating. I hadn't seen my friendly black garden snake in about 3 months. He was sunning himself in his usual place by the garden hose yesterday.
Even though he startled me quite a bit, it wasn't near as bad as coming across these nasty, slimy, icky, gross critters on my canna lily leaves. I had noticed chew marks on the green leaves, not on the bengal or striped beauty and not on the bergundy, but only on the green leaves.
What are they, where did they come from and how can I send them back to there, away from here.

Nasties in the Canna Lilies
So the picture thing isn't working. I will describe as best I can, little worms that make a little place for themselves by folding a leaf back and holding it there. They are about 2 1/2 inches long, kind of greyish green and they are so gross and slimy I can't get any closer to be more specific to count their legs or anything. They seem to be leaving some black stuff along the way of the leaves. I was hoping the picture would work since I'm not very good at descriptions.
By the way, I took my ant and roach spray out and drowned them in it. I found 3 more total of 6 since I took the picture.
Canna leaf rollers (Calpodes ethlius)? http://insects.tamu.edu/images/insects/common/images/cd-43-c-txt/cimg264.html
Terry, the dark one looks like mine. Now that we have identified them, how'd they get there and what do I do about them. How come they're not on my variagated leaves? I want them to go away.

Here are some past threads that talk about leaf rollers: http://davesgarden.com/t/393008/

Very informative Terry. Thank you. Now, is there any connection between this catarpillar and the green cannas? Are they not partial to the variagated types? I only found them on the greens, 3 of them. None on the others. Also, can I get this product to treat the problem from the home depot or lowes, or do I have to find it someplace else?
