Pain in the Patootie!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

We've had warm to moderate weather the past 2-3 weeks, and lots of stuff is up, or in pots, waiting to be planted. NOW it's forecast for a HARD FREEZE tonight and tomorrow night.

What's a Gardening Gal to do? Sigh.

Big Sigh.....us too :(

Well, I pulled out frost cloth and mason jars to cover seedlings (again) and shoved as much stuff back into the garage as possible (again). Life will be so much simpler once I can put things in the ground.

Would you believe I already have bearded iris buds? Not many - - but I would hate to lose a single bloom to cold. Last week's hard freeze turned most of my saucer magnolia blooms into something that resembles old banana peels.

I think I'll throw something over the new hostas and bleeding hearts that are coming up....I worked so hard to lose them now....out the door in the dark and cold I go....

OK, all covered up and tucked in for the night....they should be ok. Thanks for the reminder.

I know how you feel, we've had 2 weeks straight of 60 and 70 weather, but March and April are supposed to be our snowiest months, and my last frost date is May 30. But my hostas are coming up, I have iris buds all over the place, and coneflower, red valerian, penstemon are all coming up. No way can I cover everything if we get a freeze!

Cuyahoga Falls, OH(Zone 5a)

Ohio too - woke up to 2" of snow yesterday morning ! And today it is 27* and windy. Spitting snow, but I don't think it will stick. Even for Ohio - enough is enough ! My daffs are just waiting to open. I think my hosta noses took one look and went back into the ground....

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

I collect old comfortors. The heavy kind. With 5 or 6 of these, I can cover lots of stuff and it usually will suffice for a night of cold temps.

We got lucky...39 was the low.

everyone made it through ok, but I'm keeping the tarps and blankets handy

I brought about 50 pots into the garage Sunday night, where they will stay one more night. After tonight, it looks like overnight temps will stay abpve freezing. The plants I left in the yard look okay.
