Bricks and Colocasias/elephant ears

Is it wise to sand lay bricks around growing Colocasias?

I am familiar with these by sight only. I've never grown one.

Why do you think this might be a problem? Reduce moisture retention in soil perhaps?

Would the bricks and sand act as a natural mulch if there was sufficient clearance around the plants' bases to allow water in? You're one of the fortunate folks who doesn't have to lift their plants for the winter...Are you making a patio? Sounds tropical and nice!

I am not concerned about the bricks but the plants. I will give the EE's plenty of space but they do send up shoots away from Mama and I am wondering if these are stifled will it affect Mama? I seriously doubt that the babies are strong enough to lift the bricks, but they will be laid in sand so if they do, fine.

Maybe you should change this post to tropicals, as those who frequent this forum have had much more experience than I have. I live in Florida, but in the NW area. So we don't actually have much success with most tropicals year-round.

But I have seen them in some yards here. I don't know if they have to lift them in winter or not. If they do, they always replant them in the same spot.

I wouldn't think that suppressing the "babies" would hurt the plant. Seems it should just redirect the energy back to the "mama" plant. But again, I really do not know.

JudithI is right that suppressing the new shoots will help the mother plant to be larger and showier; we have one that we cut off and pull out any shoots that come up and it's the largest, best-looking plant we have, and it is one of the only ones that have flowered at all.

I think it has to be asked, which Colocasia?some send out runners, and some reproduce by Corms.

You may want to move this to Tropicals forum.
