Karrie, I cannot tell you for sure, but I have been told our climate is similar to California's (inland). However, many seeds proceed from the areas of the ski-resorts in the Andes Mountains (always indicated - thus, much colder winters/hardier plants). The data you checked, did it indicate Celsius or Farenheit degrees?
If you want to make the conversion, the coldest it gets here during winter is -3ºC (only lasts a couple hours in the early morning) and the hottest is around 34ºC during a large part of the day. 0ºC is freezing temperature.
Has Dave already submitted you the Word-document I prepared with sowing/growing tips? These consider sowing in the Central Valley, where Santiago is located.
Ursula's Garden Angel seed program - #2
It had to be in Farenheit, as it said 54 degrees - exactly what we have here today, in March. Since you are on the other side of the equator, I think you might be similar to mine.
I don't think I got the word doc, but will check the email again.
Where we are is kind of considered "high desert" - where we have much more trees, just getting out of the desert, but not mountainous. (We have the foot hills, and I live on them).
We have winters with snow but very hot (80's to 100's+ F) dry dry summers.
Karrie, I'm sure Dave will forward you (and the other contributors) the word doc when he confirms arrival of your check. If not, I ask all contributors to e-mail me first, since I cannot send attachments through DG's connection.
I think the big difference in our climates is winter. We have frost only a few times (5?) and it lasts only a couple hours. We do not have any snow at all (or to be more accurate, once every 30 or so years). Our spring/summers are very dry, only one short shower this last season. We have to water our gardens daily.
Would love to follow your reports on how these seeds are doing for all of you.
Hi Ursula, I wanted to show you. One of my friends does flower pressing. She was looking for seedlings to press and frame for a display at the South Carolina Midlands Master Gardeners Symposium that was held on Thursday. In January (while nothing much is growing here) she knew that I started seeds inside and grew them for my "winter entertainment." She came over and I gave her quite a few to press. This is a geranium from the seeds that you sent me, it was blooming under lights.
Linda, this is amazing! I am impressed by your friend's job. Not that I want to see my seeds' 'corpses' (LOL), but the quality of her job preserving colors, etc. mades these seedlings valuable educational and decorative material.
Thank you for posting these pictures!
I thought it was pretty impressive too. Every leaf and bud and bloom was perfect, (no bugs to bite it inside). It will be part of her display and will be seen by many in it's preserved state. The others are growing and blooming, still in pots. Are they annual or perennial? I'm starting to put things outside and some of the geraniums have seed pods that I will harvest. Thank you Ursula for sending me the seeds. Linda
For me, G. bohemicum behaves as an annual/biennial (all others are perennials). This could be different in other climates, I don't know. You will love the color the leaves display during Fall!
Ursula, I will definitely keep you posted on how they do. I am sending you an email.
Karrie
oh no i missed this again.
An update... 11 of them have already arrived and those 11 will go out in tomorrow's mail! I was surprised at the amounts that a lot of folks sent - we had one where they sent $25!!
From these 11 sent in, $118 has already been raised! Now that's a big surprise! I hope everyone loves Ursula's excellent seeds and thank you all for contributing the Garden Angel program!!!
best,
dave
WOW!!!!! That's almost 8 people that will not be leaving us because of monetary problems.
Thank you all very, very much.
I got my seeds today ! just wanted to say Thanks !
Dave,
Were my seeds in that first shipment? I wasn't sure if you'd got my money by that time or not.
Karrie
11 went out a few days ago and yes Karrie you were in that group.
I checked the post office box yesterday and it was empty, so I'm still waiting for the other 9 to arrive.
dave
Sir, did you happen to include any sowing/growing instructions with the seeds? I was reading on this thread and there was mention that you have this info. If you don't, do you or Ursula know where I can find it please.
Thank you..
Ursula sent it to me via. email - just send Ursula an email requesting it. :)
Dave,
I sent you an email yesterday at Standard Out. Inc.. I was delayed sending you the money. I sent via Express Mail (should be there in 2 business days) a money order for $15.00 American. Even our tiny post office could do the exchange - FYI it was 35 cents/dollar yesterday.Good for us Canadians.
Can't wait. Having a knee replacement early next week so the seeds should be here when I come home from the hospital. Hurrah!!!! I'll plant them even if I have to do it on my stomache. This is giving me so much to look foward to.
Thanks again.
Dianne
I got my seeds today thanks so much.
Hi, Just wondering if my seeds went out in the first post- I have to really watch my snail mail as the neighborhood kids tend to mess with it! Thanks!
Kidneyguy, you are in the hospital? Ouch! I hope you get better and get in your garden soon! (((hugs)))
daisyavenue, yes your seeds went out in the first batch. Maybe you'll get 'em today!
I got my seeds today. Thank you so very much Dave and Ursula. I can hardly wait to plant them.
My seeds arrived today! Thanks so much to Dave and Ursula for this opportunity.
First chance to turn on the computer this weekend- but I got them!
Thanks, Dave and 'specially Ursula!!!
Couple more things I forgot-
The little packages are so beautifully done, Ursula! Little presents, everyone of them!
And second, were we getting planting instructions from U or D? I haven't received any yet.
THX!
Mine came in the mail today! Thanks Ursula & Dave!
Karrie
Dave, should I be concerned about not receiving the seeds yet? I'm expecting a couple "pkgs" and my concern is my local postal service.
Tks....
"T" :)
Sledder,
Actually, I haven't received your payment yet! Did you send it via check or paypal? When did you send it?
I admit I haven't been to the post office today because basically the entire town is covered in water. I'll try to go tomorrow.
dave
Dave, I paid with Paypal...wondering if my seeds shipped out yet or if they will go with the second bunch. Thanks,
Eileen
Dave I sent you a money order as I told you previously the MO was in American Funds and was for $15.00 American? Have you received it yet? If you haven't I will start to chase down the Express Mail delivery status here in Canada before we tackle the US system.
Hope this ends up with better results than one of my Christmas exchanges. My parcel sent out airmail to Florida was returned several weeks later, opened, all the goodies removed and just the empty BUT sealed box returned to my doorstep. Grrrrr!
Won't give up on the mail system yet! D
The seeds have arrived at last.
Thanks so much , Dave and Ursula ,for sharing the valuable
seeds.
Tomtom
Dave, you have an email from me.
