In my zone (7b)

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

I've got annual and perennial seedlings started - some of them are pushing out of their wee little peat pods, rooting and growing like crazy. :)

I put them outside today during the warm 60's weather. When can I *really* put them in the ground? Please don't say "When the danger of the last frost has passed". I'm looking for a direct time. This month? Next month?

What are your real-life experiences on the best time to plant seedlings?

TIA,
-Jennifer

The last frost date for our area is around April 12.

I would resist planting tender plants, yet, unless you are prepared to protect them if needed. It's best make sure night temperatures are above 50 degrees and the danger of frost is over before planting annuals or tomato plants.

My real life experience for my zone 7A is around the first of April. Our last frost date is April 15 and I look at the 10 day forecast around April 1. If there are no really cold temps coming, I put out seelings, houseplants go to the front porch and I plant the tender annuals that I over winter. About 4 years ago, we had a killing frost the end of April and I had to cover everything. It took forever and I was not happy LOL

Thank you both .... :) Appreciate it. Knowing these dates will keep me from putting stuff outside too early. :)

Ours is (supposedly) May 15. Waaaaah. Enjoy your planting and don't feel guilty. ;)

I'm not too guilty, GW. You'll get to have some really great plants that I can't enjoy here...

it's too hot for lilac
it's too hot for lily-of-the-valley

and for that matter, remember my gardens are all brand-new, so I have teensie starts of all these little plant-creatures all through the yard. :)

Besides, everybody can get their chuckle knowing I'm going to have to put a blanket on a flowerbed tonight... stupid winter just won't go away! frost warnings tonight.

:)
