Sedum problems...

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

My Star sedum is starting to bloom but is is also yellowing deep inside. Could this be too much water? What amount of water do they require? And also, how will I ever epot it without breaking it all apart? Thanks!

Sure looks like too much water to me. Don't worry about it breaking apart....some of those long stems look like perhaps they are reaching for more light. You could trim it back to a manageable size (like 2-3") with a pair of scissors. Sounds brutal, but it will do it good. By "mowing" it the plant will grow stronger and fuller given the correct amount of water and light. These are tough plants.

Take the trimmings and either put them in the ground or fill a pot with a cactus type mix lay you cuttings on the surface and sprinkle with enough soil to barely cover. Put in a sunny spot, water thoroughly and then hold off on the water 'til the cuttings look like they are settling in and the soil is drier, but NOT bone dry. Sedums require more water than one would think, but then there's that fine line where they are too soggy. If a Sedum is "limp" it usually means too much water.

Another thing......during a really hot summer here in California, some sedums will "bolt" when they go into flowering mode. Once they are finished blooming, bring out the scissors or clippers and give it a good haircut.....within a couple of weeks it will be thriving and fill in as a thick mat.

What a terriffic explanation! Thank you! When do you know if they need repotting? I do think this is a case of overwatering. I need to move them away from things that need a lot of water. Once again, thank you!

Plus, these are only getting bright shade...no full sun. I don't have many area where I have direct sun. How do I know when to water?
