Wedding flowers

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Looks like my son will be having an October wedding. I guess I better rethink my garden plans for this year since they are planning a fall wedding and want me to furnish flowers for the church. Help what will still be pretty in October that would make good cut flowers and arrangements?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

White oriental lilies.......
calla lilies

Mums? And Congratulations Peggy!!!!

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

CC what a great idea. I could start some of them later and keep them in the gh so they would still be pretty in Oct. Vic thank you. Guess you better plan a trip this way about then. lol

Perrysburg, OH(Zone 5a)

What about sunflowers...especially the dark red ones if you start them late??
Or dried wheat and cattails..ornamental grasses....gerbers...orange and yellow Asiatic lillies...
I'm a bridal consultant at the flower shop I manage, so I'll try to think of some more ideas for you.

Burgundy snaps....statice....we use "Golden Aster" alot aka Ragweed!!! ....Bittersweet...still thinking!!!

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

And lots and lots of ferns. Congrats, Peggy! Just think, in a couple of years, maybe you will have more than just two grand dogs!!

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks everybody for all the ideas. Roz I would love to have grand children but I am in no hurry. lol

I think the wedding should be in your garden :-)

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

Congrats!!!
I would think you could start about any annuals late and have them for October couldn't you... might be a bit unusual, but what about putting some dafs and tulips and Iris in the fridge, this summer and trying to get them to bloom in October?

That would get folks talking!!

How'd she do that! LOL ;-)

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Vic please don't say that to loud. (they might hear ya). lol Melissa that's what I was thinking too. About all I know is she is wanting purple. Hey that is a good idea wonder if I could do the dutch iris that way?

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

I don't know why you couldn't, especially if you kept some from blooming this spring. hmmmm

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, that's great, Peggy - congratulations! I agree about the sunflowers, and they'd be such a pretty foil to purple blooms. How about Salvia?

Perrysburg, OH(Zone 5a)

What about some celosia or lavender??? Canterbury bells

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, Lavender...Mmmmmmm. Not that a wedding party would need an herb known for calming effects! ;)

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

mystic - don't know one flower from another but i offer my congratulations

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Wow more good ideas. Kimberly I had some beautiful purple salvia's last year. It's iffy if they will come back. I kinda push the zone on them. But I have allot of different ones started from seed so that's a real good idea. BJT the canterbury bells would be beautiful , but I don't think I will have any blooming this year. Thanks everybody for the ideas and the congrats. Herbie you don't have to know anything about flowers. Thanks for the congrats.

Would it be acceptable to have acorns, chestnut burrs, grapes, apples, sumac, and/or gourds in the arrangements? I have an artificial grapevine (purple grapes, purplish foliage) and sunflowers and orange chrysanthemums that I use together for Thanksgiving decorations and the purple and yellow and orange look nice together. I know that isn't a traditional color combination, but I have always preferred bold or dark colors to pastels.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

My niece had an Oct. wedding and they used lots of sunflowers. She had a bouquet with those newer small flowers and everyone received mini candles. They were made in terra cotta flower pots - about 1 1/2" high- then were painted with a large yellow sunflower on the front and their names were written on the 'collar' - not sure what the upper flat edge is called. Very cute!!! and fall looking!!

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

Ooooo, big orange 'Mrs. Eileen' and purple 'Thomas Edison' dinnerplate dahlias!

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Purple Coneflower? Congratulations to Heath and his fiancee.
Then again...........there's always Dahlias in bloom that time of year.

Great ideas everybody. I need to get some dahlias I haven't got any this year since eyes didn't do that co-op this year. lol Thanks eyes it's good to see you posting more.

wally world has them or order from lenjo!

Lenjo's are wonderful, big, beautiful and much cheaper than Walmart!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Something else that's really pretty in arrangements is Queen Anne's lace. If you put them in a vase of water tinted with a little food coloring, the flowers will turn color, too.
