Growing Pumpkins

cape may court house, NJ(Zone 6a)

Have a niece that lives in, N.H.
She just happened to tell me that she has a small Vegetable garden.. A big surprise to me as she doesn't like playing in dirt!
She has tried growing pumpkins and hasn't had any luck.
Any suggestions?

Small garden = need smallish plants. Pumpkins can really sprawl, and the bigger they are, typically the more room they need. The smaller pumpkins such as Baby Boo and Jack-be-little can be grown on a trellis if space is really at a premium. And there are some full-size/"pie" types that are somwhat bushy rather than vining.

I would lean toward growing something unusual that can't be easily found in stores, such as white types ('Lumina' is a full-size, or 'Baby Boo'), or one of the Cinderella-types.

Did she have trouble with the plants themselves or with them not producing pumpkins? I have found that pumpkins produce better for me if I pollinate them.

I never have trouble with small to large pumpkins just the really large ones. Sometimes we just don't get emough sun and heat to get the alantic giants to mature. I dig a large deep hole and fill it half full of cow stuff mixed well with topsoil and peat moss and when transplanting I apply MG or up start then protect from wind with clear plasticfor however long it takes for plant to kick into high gear. Then I leaf feed for two or three times lightly. Oh yes the cow stuff is always well rotted.good luck Ernie

Hello:
Thanks for getting back to me..
I don't know what her problem was, she's a new gardner and doesn't really know all that much(me neither) She has three acres. So she does have the space.. She left for Mass today ,will be back to N.H. on Sun. I'll ask her what she did.
Thank you...
Sandy
