On Poop!!
What kind do you prefer?
I have cows and a horse. Years ago when my oldest kids were little we had a couple of rabbits. I just loved having them, and somewhere I read that their droppings are good for use in flower beds and gardens, but I'm unsure... but, if that would be an "added benefit" of having another rabbit... then I'm all for it!! LOL
I can't find where I read it at, or can't remember who told me, that the rabbit droppings don't have to "cure" like horse or cow maneur, is this correct? Or am I just completely off base on all counts?
Can we discuss the benefits of the different types?
What do you prefer??
Gimme the Scoop...
I don't use it, but I thought that horse manure didn't have to cure. Don't you just use the dry piles? I have used rabbit pellets in my garden before with no burning of my plants.
'Tis true, "smart pills" (rabbit droppings) can be used directly in the garden with no composting required. It's a wonderful amendment!
I used to bring in horse and cow manure but it also brought in a lot of weeds with it. Stable sweepings are fairly good but I'd check out the pasture that the horses are in...if it's full of weeds, don't get the manure from that farm!
woohoo, Thanks Shoe, I'm going to start looking for a bunny!!
The one Rabbit I had before was SMART! He could open his cage if he wanted to. :-) The kids and I used to put him on a leash and let him hop around the yard... he loved it, though, with my greyhound, I'll have to make sure that I don't do that near her. :-(
I wish you were closer, I have two I'm trying to find homes for.
I prefer cow do do that has been composed for a year or two I dont get weeds from mine because my bil piles it on a concrete slab all summer and turns it about once a week and cooks it killing the seed. Then I cover it with plastic and let it sit for a year . In fact I am going to get the tractor as soon as I get off and spread a bunch . It is loose and flaky and works well even use it in my flower beds.
Shoe about your light rail did you get the 6 rpm motor or the 10 I wanted the six but had to take the 10 because I was in a rush. Hooky yet again three days in a row now well tomorrow its back to work. Ernie
awwwwww shoe, and I have 3 kiddos up here that would love to have them! (me too, but I'm the adult, can't be too excited. :-)
I don't think Bunnies by Priority Mail would work very well. :-(
Melissa Maybe shoe could just make the bunnies a sack lunch of dura cells and point them in your direction. If he figures out the right number of batteries to give them they will run out of juice in your yard. Right beam me up lol. Ernie
Off to find two little drums for their trip! ;>)
Well...If you want to bring them to Maryland, Shoe, we could serve as bunny couriers back to Ohio. :)
I did read a thread here on DG where folks had given their bunny tomatoes to munch on, and everywhere they used its pellets, they got tomato seedlings. Remember that, any of you DG older-timers?
Wait, I found it! It's in the Garden Mistakes thread. Click the link up top to skip to the first instance of the word "ahhhd". :) http://rir.davesgarden.com/t/20066/ahhhd

Hah! That could be put to use in a positive way, GW! I can just see a Bunny Program where you feed them certain foods then turn them loose in your pasture/garden to seed your crops for you!
Hmmm.... τΏτ
There ya go! You'd have to be sure to use left-brained bunnies so the rows ended up straight.
What a great thread that was :)
I read an article where the bunny cages were on a stand with wheels. They would move the stand to different areas of the garden each day to 'drop' the droppings right where they wanted them. They did it with rolling chicken coops also!
We use horse manure. Several years ago when we moved into our place (3 acres of a former sod farm :( no nutrients left whatsoever), I spent the whopping sum of $5.14 and placed the following ad in the classifieds: "Wanted: well rotted horse manure. Will haul. Call 301-xxx-xxxx 24/7". The phone never stopped ringing so DH made a mission out of visiting each place; picking his poop so to speak. We finally settled on a horse farm that boards for rich folks. They were meticulous about keeping records about what the horses were fed and where they grazed. Here in MD, they are required to have a plan registered with the State to dispose of manure. We have become close friends with our supplier. Todd, the farm manager, goes out once a week rain, snow, shine, and turns the entire pile. It is the length of a football field. It takes us a year to haul what has already been there 3 years so it's always "cooked". Todd meets DH in the field and loads him up with his front end loader. Costs us our time, fuel; that's it.
I always cut flowers in the summer to send along with DH when he picks up the poop for the owner's wife. She always laugh cuz I send a note that reads: "For all your horses 'doo', these buds are for you!"
DH laughed so much when I placed the ad, but it was the best part of $10 I ever spent :)
My Mom used to use cow doo doo around her delphiniums and they were the nicest flowers around.
My Grandmother always said my toes grew so long cus I was always taking the short cut thru Markley Jones' cow pasture. I wonder if she was on to sumpin'? τΏτ
With my 'city lot' I have only been using commercial products. One of my wishes has been to go to Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo once a year when they offer "ZooDoo" for a pittance. I wonder how big my poppies would grow with an ample dose of elephant doo ?
